Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Seamer & Irton CC 2nd XI v Wykeham 2nd XI on Sat 28 May 2016 at 1.30pm
Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 37 runs

Match report Captain Tiff won the toss and chose to bat. It didn't seem like a good decision when he was deceived by a Day chinaman off the 5th ball of the 2nd over for a duck. Connor came in, fished at the next ball and was sent walking when Andy Shep took the catch at 1st slip. That brought in Phil Metcalfe, who together with Josh Lowe slowly started to rebuild the innings. The rate was 2 an over up to the 15th over, before the pair started to accelerate. There was a 10 minute interruption for rain at which an over was lost. Phil stroked a couple of boundaries in the 20th over and the score progressed to 53. However in the next over, he drove a ball back towards the bowler and his partner Josh was run out when the ball was deflected off the bowler's hand on to the stumps. The Hax came in and kept the score ticking over with a good number of 2's, and helped by half a dozen wides from their bowlers. The partnership had made 40 runs by the 32nd over when Hax saw his leg stump pegged back by Scotty Wardman. That was 94 for 4. Phil was stroking the ball around and looked set for his 50 when he misjudged a Wardman arm ball and his middle peg was knocked back for 47. DJ smote the next ball for 4 but big Scotty got him 4 balls later when 2 of his stumps were broken. That was 105 for 6 in the 34th over. In the next, Beaver went for a Thompson googly and hit it straight down the throat of Basher Wilson on the mid wicket boundary. Enter young Archie Graham, 11 years old and playing in his 1st senior game. Standing firm, defending the good balls, stroking the bad, he hit Thompson to the mid wicket boundary, and together with Gaz Walters formed a nice little partnership worth 24 runs. Gaz's part in this included a 6 to the hedge over the mid wicket boundary. In the 42nd over, Gaz pushed for a 2nd run and the throw coming in from the long on boundary ran out young Archie. That was 133 for 8. Could we get a 3rd batting point in less than 3 overs? Enter Doctor Lawty. Using all his years of experience, he stroked the ball mainly to the leg side for a series of singles and 2's, and a hit to the square leg boundary. The partnership with Gaz realised 21 valuable runs of which Doc had scored 15 of them. Gaz also remained unbeaten for 14 and a 3rd batting point nicely attained in a final total of 154 for 8. Scotty Wardman was best bowler for Wykeham with 3 for 31 from 10 overs.
Two Shepherdsons opened for Wykeham against the fast pace of DJ and Hax. In the 4th over with the score on 10, Andy Shep attempted a pull off a Haxby long hop and Gaz diving forward at square leg took the catch inches from the ground. Rich Creaser came in attacking DJ's next over for 7 runs. He hit the 1st ball of Hax's next over towards the long on boundary, where Tony Singh gathered the ball and threw it in. Both batsmen ended up at the bowlers end, and Hax threw the ball to Tiff's gloves and Creaser was run out for a quick 9. That was 23 for 2. The other Shepherdson was moving the score along with a series of 2's, and the score had reached 39 in the 11th over when young Tim Poor feathered a DJ seamer to keeper Tiff. His father Richard came in and together with James Shep kept the score moving with boundaries and 2's. Beaver replaced Hax at the village end starting with a maiden and conceding 7 runs off his next 2 overs. From the last ball of his 4th, the 18th of the innings, he cleaned up father Richard for 18 with another off cutter. That was 64 for 4. He and Connor were bowling tidily and slowing the Wykeham run rate down with a number of maidens. In the 23rd over, Connor got one to move off the seam and opener James Shep was gone for a patient 24 in almost an hour and a half. That was 69 for 5, and it soon became 70 for 6 when Beaver trapped their keeper Vasey lbw for a single. In the 28th over with the score on 85, Beaver tempted their captain Tommo into driving one up at cover where the Hax comfortably took a sharp catch. The usually powerful Scotty Wardman was being restrained by the accuracy of our bowlers into stroking singles instead of boundaries. Meanwhile Dan Bateson at the other end did manage to hit Hax for 6 into the cornfield, but his innings came to an end when Hax knocked back his off stump for 8 in the 35th over. That was 98 for 8. No 10 Basher Wilson had a quick flurry of hits, but Scotty lost his patience in the 39th over when he tried to carve Phil Metcalfe over the mid wicket boundary, and Beaver took a spectacular low catch to dismiss him for 18. In the next over, Steve Day tried to hit Connor but managed to find the waiting hands of young Archie at mid on, and Wykeham were all out for 117. Beaver finishing with 3 for 20 off 12 overs.
This was an excellent win for Seamer after losing a couple of men from the previous match. 2 batting partnerships early on involving Phil Metcalfe, and 2 at the end involving Gaz Walters, and with Doc running his socks off were instrumental in this win. Our bowlers kept the pressure on their batsmen bowling tidily, especially after the main batsmen had been dismissed. Mention must go to Beaver for his excellent figures.
And so to Flixton next week. This will be a real test for our winning morale.
