Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 3 wkts

Match report Captain Beaver won the toss and put Nawton in to bat. Against the fast pace of the Hax and the guile of left armer Beaver, openers Neil Ward and John Moxon, the former Lockton player started cautiously reaching 15 after 6 overs. With the 2nd ball of his 4th over, the Hax tempted Ward in to a lofted drive and Phil Metcalfe took a waist high catch at mid off. After bowling a wicket maiden, the Hax was replaced by Jamie Griffin, playing in his 1st match for the 2nds this season. In his 2nd over, the 11th, his in-swinging pace deceived Moxon who saw his stumps shattered. That was 22 for 2. In his next over, Griff reaped double delight when batsman Dunn attempted a square cut which landed low in Tony Singh's body at point. After what seemed like an age, Tony managed to manoevre the ball from arms and midriff to his hand, and claimed the catch. 3 balls later and Tom Ellis was heading for the pavilion after having his stumps shattered too. At the other end, Beaver was bowling tidily with 3 consecutive maidens. Neil Adams and James Hugill came together and provided a mini stand for Nawton with a series of boundaries in 4 overs taking the score to 46. Griff struck again when Adams tickled one into keeper Bakes' gloves for 15. Connor replaced Beaver at the village end starting with a maiden. Griff followed suit. In his next over, the 21st, Griff cleaned up Pete Wilson who had hung around the crease for 15 minutes for a single. That was 56 for 6. It was double delight once again for Griff in the 23rd over when Boo held on to a catch at extra cover to dismiss George Bentley for a duck. Off the last ball, J Coldbeck shuffled in front and up went the umpire's finger. At 65 for 8 and with Nawton having only 10 men, it was all over bar the shouting. Mainly thanks to Hugill's effort, the last pair added 11 runs before James Wheeldon steered a shot into the safe hands of Phil once again at mid off. It was 76 all out, with Hugill undefeated on 29. Griff taking the bowling honours with a superb spell of 8 wickets for 24 runs in 9 overs and 1 ball.
With us top of the league and having beaten all before us, surely it seemed a formality that we could knock off this low score without too much trouble. Unfortunately not! In the 1st over bowled by George Bentley, Connor had a rush of blood swinging wildly and saw his stumps dis-arranged. Worse was to follow off the 1st ball of the 2nd over bowled by spinner John Dunn. Bakes also playing in his 1st Saturday match for the 2nds attempted a flashing cut and the ball flew wide to Tom Ellis's left at 2nd slip. He stretched out his arm and the ball stuck in his hand for an amazing catch. Phil came to the crease and drove the 1st 2 balls faced to the extra cover boundary. Boo played out a couple of maidens from Dunn's next 2 overs while Phil found the boundary again off Bentley. In the 7th over, the score had reached 17 when Phil nicked a Bentley delivery down towards the 3rd man boundary. The fielder running round from fine leg picked up the ball and threw in to the keeper, whereby Boo was run out going for a 3rd run. He had been at the crease for 20 minutes without scoring. In the next over off the 1st ball faced of a Dunn googly, Griff attempted a carribean style hit to mid wicket and saw his stumps displaced. That was 20 for 4, and looking ominous. Phil had scored 17 of them and was joined by the Hax, who found the offside boundary in Bentley's next over. He kept the score ticking over with 2 consecutive boundaries off Dunn in the 12th over. From the 1st ball of the 13th, Phil nicked another Bentley seamer and Ellis took another wonder catch at 1st slip. That was 38 for 5. In Bentley's next over, he surprised the Hax who played inside a straight one and was bowled. Gaz Walters came in and nicked the last ball of that over to the 3rd man boundary. Pete Wilson replaced Dunn at the pavilion end and Bareoo hit 2 boundaries off that 1st over. Gaz hit another boundary this time to the leg side off Bentley's next, but lost his middle and leg stumps 2 balls later. That was 60 for 7, and young Archie came to the crease. The next ball was a beamer straight at Archie's head, but he managed to duck under it. The shock left him in tears and he had to be escorted from the field. Enter Captain Beaver. With 16 runs still needed and only 3 wickets left, could he steer us home? He did hit a boundary in Bentley's next over, but it was left to Bareoo in Wilson's 3rd over, the 20th with a nick and a smote to the boundary to see us home. He finished unbeaten on 20, with Bentley 4 for 27 from his 10 overs.
This was a narrow victory with nerves a plenty after some of our earlier batsmen threw their wickets away. Praise must go in the 1st instance to Griff for his excellent bowling spell to put us in the frame for what should have been a much easier victory. Phil and the Hax dug in for double figure scores but Bareoo held the tail together to steer us home. Well done lads! Next we welcome Muston.
