Match report Captain Bakes won the toss and chose to bat. Off Norman Shabir's 3rd ball, Josh Mac was slow to react to the fast pace and was comprehensively bowled, with just 1 leg bye on the board. 3 wides were bowled that over. Davy G creamed the 2nd ball of Martin Mason's next over through the covers for 4, but was tied down without scoring in the 3rd over bowled by Shabir. After stroking a nice cut to the gully boundary off Mason's 2nd over, Boo was deceived by the next ball and saw his stumps broken. That was 17 for 2 in the 4th over. Dave played 6 dot Shabir balls in the 5th over then launched into the next 2 with boundaries to mid wicket and long off. Doc, promoted up the order had driven a few balls to the same fielder at mid off. However, he chanced his luck on the on side and drove a Mason delivery straight up to Banyard at wide mid on. That was 25 for 3 in the 6th over, and Dave cut one to point for 4 in the same over. Jack Stephenson bowled the 7th over, conceding 6 wides off 3 deliveries, and Dave hit him for boundaries to mid wicket and cow corner. In the 8th bowled by Cameron Anderson, singles and wides were conceded before Connor cracked one through the covers for 4. But a rush of blood saw his stumps shattered next ball, with the score on 55 and 4 wickets down. In Stephenson's next over, Dave steered the 1st ball off his legs to the shed boundary, and drove the 2nd ball down to the swings also for 4. A further 4 wides were conceded that over. In the 10th over, Dave again drove Anderson to the boundary, but Jimmy G's pegs were knocked back 2 balls later. That was 74 for 5. Shabir was back for his last over, the 11th, and Gaz Walters found his 9th delivery too hot to handle and was cleaned up playing on. Dave brought up his 50 off the last ball of the 12th over when he creamed Anderson over the extra cover boundary for 6. The score had reached 92 for 6. Mason was back for the 13th over, and Josh Broadhead pulled him to the mid wicket boundary before Dave glanced another off his legs to the shed. Their captain Chris Mann bowled the last over, and didn't concede a boundary off the bat. His left arm tweak caused a problem for our Josh when the 2nd ball found it's way to the stumps after Josh missed a swipe. The 5th ball was wide, and so was the 6th, but the keeper missed it and it sped to the boundary for 5 wides. After nudging a single, Beaver misjudged the flight of the 8th delivery and became the 7th batsman to be bowled. Our innings closed 2 balls later on 115 for 8 with Dave carrying his bat for 59 runs. 4 of their 5 bowlers grabbed 2 wickets apiece, but conceded 23 wides in total in the process.
Harry Walmsley and captain Mann opened the Flixton innings in bright light. Jimmy G was steady away for the 1st 6 balls of the 1st over, but Mann hit a boundary off the 7th ball. Beaver had conceded 19 runs off his opening over at Sherburn last week, and the opposition laid into him once again. 5 runs and a wide were conceded off his 1st 5 deliveries before Mann cracked him for boundaries to square leg and long on. In the 3rd over, Mann continued scoring with a 3 towards cow corner and a drive to the long on boundary, but played on next ball off Jimmy for 21 of the 28 runs on the board. Stuart Stocks didn't last long, skying a Beaver seamer into the air, and watching helplessly as our veteran left armer held on to the catch when it eventually came down. But prior to this, Walmsley had creamed a 6 to backward square leg and a drive for 4 to long on. At the end of the over, the score had reached 39 for 2. The same batsman then clobbered poor Jimmy over the sight screen into the car park and followed up with another boundary to long off. Josh B replaced Beaver at the village end and only conceded 4 runs off his 1st over. DJ came on at the pavilion end and Pete Banyard scored a 3 into the outfield and a 6 over long off. Flixton were making mincemeat of our bowling, and this was emphasized in the 8th over when Josh's 2nd went for 19 runs. Walmsley scored them all with boundaries to mid wicket, extra cover and long on and a 6 to mid wicket also. That was 88 for 2. Then he took it out on DJ in the next over with boundary hits to mid wicket and extra cover and a straight 6 over the sight screen once again. Connor was brought on to delay the inevitable and succeeded. He conceded only 4 singles and took the prized scalp of the irrepressible Walmsley, bowled off the penultimate ball. Josh Mac bowled the 11th over, and 9 runs were quickly despatched off the 1st 4 balls with Banyard hitting the winning run with a boundary to long off. He finished unbeaten with 21 runs.
115 would have been a challenge to most teams in this league, but Flixton were a different class batting wise as probably expected. Praise must go to our Davy G who showed his class by carrying his bat for a well deserved 50+ when all around crumbled. Our cause was helped by their bowlers bowling 23 wides. Their batsmen knocked off the runs with consummate ease, and were always well ahead of the scoring rate in the run chase. This win puts Flixton 7 points clear at the top and plunges us into the relegation places. A few big efforts are clearly needed. At least we won't have to play them next season, whatever the outcome.
