Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 11 runs

Match report Captain DJ won the toss and elected to bat on this mild sunny evening. Griff hoping to continue where he left off on Saturday took a great rive at Ben Rowe's 3rd ball and his stumps were sent sprawling. Not a good start, and with Gary Elwell's 1st over conceding just 2 singles, we were 4 for 1. Corey found the boundary in the 3rd over with an exquisite cover drive off Rowe, and with Elwell bowling tidily next over for 2 runs, we were 13 for 1. The next boundary came in the 7th over, with Bakes cutting Rowe through gully off the last ball. Next over and Corey straight drove Elwell for 4, plus a couple of 2's into the vacant outfield. Off the 1st ball of the 9th over, Bakes played all round a straight Rowe delivery and saw his stumps disturbed. That was 36 for 2. Corey was going well at the other end keeping the scoreboard ticking over with a small number of consecutive 2's, He had been joined at the crease by Dallen, who let fly in the 10th with a cut for 4 to point, followed next ball by a nick for 4 down to 3rd man. A single then brought up 50 for the team. Both bowlers had bowled their maximum 5 overs each and were replaced by Jake Codling and young left arm spinner Tom Owenson. Our 2 batsmen then found it difficult to get the ball away with their bowlers bowling accurate line and lengths. Only 5 runs were added in the next 4 overs. Corey then got going again planting Codling for 6 into the tall hedge at mid wicket at the school end. Another 6 runs in singles and 2's were added that over to make the score 67 for 2 with 5 overs left. Next over the 16th, and Dallen's frustration forced him into a tame square drive into Codling's clutches at point off an Owenson chinaman. He had made 18, and the score 69 for 3. Corey then drove Codling to the cow corner boundary in the 17th, following up with a 2. Tuna Luke was next in to partner Corey, and the pair were struggling to find the boundary, with only singles and 2's being taken. In the 20th and last over, Luke managed to drive Owenson to the cover boundary, and Corey on 49 played and missed the last 2 deliveries. We finished on 92 for 3, well short of the intended target under the conditions. Owenson bowled 5 overs taking 1 for 14, with Rowe earlier taking 2 for 22 from his 5 overs.
Liam Salt and Mike Price opened up for Cloughton. DJ conceded 1 run and 2 wides from his 1st over. Salt stroked Beaver to the mid wicket boundary in the 2nd, and followed up in the 3rd with an extra cover drive to the shed off DJ. But after scoring a 2, Price top edged DJ into the gully for our Jakey to take a comfortable catch, and 15 for 1. New batsman Taylor was a spectator as Salt took on Beaver driving him to the long off boundary in the 4th over, then stroking a 2 and a single to push the score on to 23 for 1. More singles followed before Beaver penetrated Taylor's guard in the 6th by bowling him. That was 27 for 2, compared to our 20 for 1 at the same stage. Beaver's next over, the 8th was a wicket maiden, with Rowe seeing his middle stump knocked back, and 32 for 3. Cloughton were now struggling to score runs slightly earlier than we were in the middle of our innings. Next over, DJ's 5th, Salt lobbed one up deep into the covers and Griff running forward took a smart catch. He made 21 and it was 32 for 4. DJ finished with 2 for 16 from his 5 overs. Beaver then completed his 5 overs taking 2 for 20. Jakey bowled the 11th over starting with 2 wides, and Tom Owenson finished it off with a boundary cover drive. Corey came on for the 12th over and struck immediately pegging L Jones for 0, and 43 for 5. Another 6 runs were added before Owenson top edged a Jakey delivery into DJ's hands at gully. Next over, the 14th, Codling drove Corey to the long off boundary. 2 balls later, Kieron Fields was cleaned up by Corey, and Cloughton were struggling on 55 for 7. In Jake's next over, Elwell drove hard to mid off and the ball stuck in Beaver's hands for a sharp catch. That was 58 for 8. There was still 5 overs left for Cloughton to get 35 runs, and Griff came on for the 16th over. 4 runs were added, before Codling clouted the last delivery high in the air between long off and deep extra cover. Tuna Luke ran round and dived forward to take a pretty spectacular catch to the amazement of his team mates and the onlooking spectators, with whoops of joy being heard around the ground. That was 63 for 9. Jake bowled the 17th over and last man Dean Macauley latched on to 3 consecutive deliveries despatching them to mid wicket and square leg, to set up a pulsating finish. It was 75 for 9, chasing 93 with 3 overs left. Back came Griff with a good tight over to put the mockers on their free scoring, with 4 runs added. Jake was entrusted to bowl the 19th over, and 2 singles were taken from 4 balls. The 5th ball hit the jackpot with Mike Walpole's stumps being up-ended. Cloughton had been shot out for 81, and 11 runs short of our score. Macauley was unbeaten on 14, with Jake taking 3 for 27 from 5 overs less 1 ball. Corey had 2 for 10 from 2 overs, and with his 49 runs must be man of the match.
Although this was a good win, the margin could have been bigger if some of our batsmen had run quicker between the wickets. Missed opportunities could have given us the 100. In the end, our bowlers put the brakes on their batting, and our fielding was excellent with all catches taken, giving us the narrow margin victory. This was a quarter final match, and in the semi final we play Wykeham away. We can be confident of progress whilst we are winning matches. UTS!!
