Heslerton 2nd XI v Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Seamer & Irton CC 2nd XI on Sat 16 Jul 2016 at 1.30pm
Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 293 runs

Match report On a warm but breezy sunny summer day, Captain Tiff won the toss and chose to bat. Heslerton took to the field a little late with only 6 men, and 2 joined within a couple of overs. Corey and Tiff exploited this extra space hitting 2 boundaries per over and were looking comfortable on 47 after 6 overs, with the home side now up to 9 fielders. During this period, Corey's 1st 5 scoring shots were all boundaries, 3 of them through the gully area, and Tiff had found the boundary 4 times all round the ground. The tempo then increased with 17 coming from James Duffill's 4th over and 13 from the next bowled by Mark Dring. That made it 84 after 9 overs, and still the runs were flowing off Corey and Tiff's bats. Harry Watson replaced Dring at the top end to bowl the 11th over. After boundaries through cover and long on, Corey stroked another 2 to bring up the 100 partnership. In the next over, Corey square drove to the boundary to bring up his 50 which had taken only 53 minutes. And so it continued, boundary after boundary, and every part of the ground was covered. Tiff reached his 50 in the 20th over with a 2 into the outfield off Andy Hunt and followed up with 2 boundaries to long off and cover. At this point, Corey was in the 80's, and moved into the 90's with 2 more boundary shots to gully and long on. In the 21st over, the partnership was finally broken when Corey heaved at a Kelsea Dent delivery and was caught at wide mid on by Mark Swallow 4 short of his maiden century. The partnership had made 185 runs, and that brought Phil to the crease. Tiff had made 60 and then started to take charge hitting 4 boundaries in Dent's next over. Phil was stroking singles, some quickly, and 2's while theoccasional boundary was coming off Tiff's bat during this next spell. In the 27th over off Dent, Tiff brought up his ton with a single. It had taken him exactly 2 hours, and included 18 boundaries. Heslerton changed their keeper when Dring relinquished the gloves to start his 2nd spell in the 29th over. Tiff hit further boundaries to long off and extra cover in the following few overs with Phil also finding the extra cover boundary. It was finally all over for a tired looking Tiff in the 33rd over when he played inside another Dring seamer and his off stump was lying flat on the ground. He had made 116 with 20 boundaries in 2 hours and 26 minutes, and his partnership with Phil had realised 85 runs. The score was 270 for 2 and that brought in Connor who had been waiting patiently with pads on since the 1st over. He didn't last long unfortunately. After steering Dring to the 3rd man boundary in the 35th over, he too found his off peg lying prostrate on the ground. That was 280 for 3. Brother Boo joined Phil in the middle, and played himself in. He hit Callum Dent to the wide long on boundary in the 38th over which brought up the team's 300. Phil was now in charge with 3 drives to the long on boundary before and after this, but Boo lost his wicket, cleaned up in the 40th over when Duffill started his 2nd spell. Josh Mac came in and launched his 1st delivery faced to the wide long on boundary. At the end of the over, Phil who had been batting sensibly on 44 had to retire from the crease after receiving news of a family matter. The score had reached 314 for 4, and 2 overs later it was 321 for 5 when Josh Mac tried a reverse sweep off quickie Duffill and was also bowled. Next over and Mark Lawton was given out lbw by umpire Connor, despite protesting that it hit his bat, and Gaz Walts was cleaned up by Duffill the over after that. In the last over, Tony connected with Dent's last ball to hit over the head of mid on for a single and Seamer had finished on 330 for 7. Duffill was the pick of their bowlers with 3 for 70 off 10 overs.
With all 9 men from Heslerton and no loanees to call on, it was to put it bluntly going to be near impossible to overhaul our huge total. Beaver opened up at the bottom end and Duffill steered a 2 off the 1st ball. Connor opened at the top end and soon had the home team in trouble. After Swallow had steered the 2nd ball for a single, Duffill feathered the next to keeper Tiff who went up in sheer delight with the rest of the team. In the next over Beaver planted one on Dave Senior's middle stump and Heslerton were 4 for 2. That soon became 4 for 3 when Boo took a straightforward catch at cover to dismiss Swallow off the 1st ball of Connor's 2nd over; a wicket maiden. Callum Dent steered a 2 off the 1st ball of Beaver's 3rd over and was cleaned up next ball by his notorious left arm inswinger. Next over and it was double delight for Connor. Harry Watson played all across a straight one and was bowled. J P Watson came in, stroked one to the boundary, then went the same way as his relative. Heslerton were reeling on 13 for 6 after just 6 overs. How were they going to make a game of it? Quite honestly......not at all. Despite a little resistance, captain Mark Dring and Kelsea Dent put together a partnership worth 21 runs which included 3 boundaries and a 3. It was ended in the 10th over when Dring was deceived by a straight Connor seamer and his stumps were shattered. In the 11th, it was all over when Dent was cleaned up by Beaver, and with no more men to bat, they were all out for 37. Seamer had won by the huge margin of 293 runs. Connor with his 5 for 13 off 5 overs promptly held up the match ball to the waiting sparse crowd of onlookers in front of the pavilion. Mention too for Beaver with 3 for 24 off 6 overs.
This match is typical of what can happen when a team at the top meets a team languishing at the bottom. Seamer were in a different class to Heslerton. Batting, bowling, fielding, keeping, it was there for all to see. If that victory doesn't fire us up for next weekend's crucial games, then I don't know what will! Flixton and Kirkbymoorside........let's be 'avin yer!!!
