Kirkbymoorside v Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Seamer & Irton CC 2nd XI on Sat 23 Jul 2016 at 1.30pm
Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 20 runs

Match report Captain Tiff won the toss and decided to bat. Tiff and Corey went to the middle hoping to continue where they left off last weekend. They started well enough and were largely untroubled as they reached 26 after 5 overs. The 6th was a good over for us with Tiff finding the boundary 4 times to cover, extra cover, long leg and a straight drive to long on, making it 42 for 0. The run rate slowed with 2 maidens, the 2nd which produced the 1st wicket in the 9th over. Corey played all across a straight Jeremy Underwood delivery and was bowled for 19, with the score on 48. Phil came to the crease, and immediately started stroking and pushing singles. Tiff was stroking singles and 2’s and the tempo reduced as the pair dug in. Tiff reached his 50 in the 21st over with another single after an hour and a quarter. Phil’s 1st 2 came in the 24th over after scoring 13 consecutive singles, and the score moved on to 96 for 1. In the next over, Tiff hit 2 boundaries to extra cover and cow corner, and Phil followed suit 2 overs later with boundaries to cover and through gully in consecutive balls. But with the next ball, Phil attempted a leg side clip off Andy Bayes and the ball spooned up to Jon Carter just forward of square leg for a simple catch. That was 117 for 2 and the partnership had realised 69 runs. 2 overs later, Bayes bowled a wicket maiden accounting for Tiff who had feathered a delivery behind to keeper Blacklock for 69 valuable runs. That was 123 for 3 in the 29th over, and so started the procession. The 32nd over brought double delight for Howard Mudd when 1st Boo went for a big yahoo and was bowled, then brother Connor attempted a leg side pull only to find Martin Thompson’s hands at backward square leg. In the next over, Hax’s short stay at the wicket ended when he edged a Bayes delivery to Mudd standing at 1st slip, and Seamer had lost 3 wickets for just 1 run. Worse was to follow in the 36th over when DJ was cleaned up by Mudd, and the score had reached 139 for 7. Next over and Beaver became Bayes’ 4th victim when he also was cleaned up. Carter came on to bowl the 39th over and finished the innings off with 2 wickets in 3 balls, clean bowling both Doc and Tony with the final score on 145 all out. We had collapsed with 9 wickets falling for just 28 runs. Bayes had 4 for 26 off 7 overs, and Mudd 3 for 31 off 12. Was this going to be a big enough total to defend? There were some worried faces having tea in the defunct bar room.
Kirkby opened up with Thompson who in the previous encounter had carried his bat for 71, and Mudd, deputising for the unavailable Charlton. Gee’d up by captain wicket keeper Tiff, the Hax and Connor started well giving little away. Kirkby were on 8 after 8 overs and 20 after 12. DJ replaced the Hax for the 13th, conceding 7 runs including a club to mid wicket by Mudd. Connor bowled the 14th and Thompson straight drove him twice to the long off boundary. Beaver came on for the 16th, and his 2nd ball trapped Mudd lbw for 13 with the score on 41. Thompson at this point was on 22. J Thackray came to the crease and immediately hit 2 boundaries. He followed this up in Beaver’s next plundering 13 runs including a 4 to cover and a 6 to cow corner. In DJ’s 4th over, the 19th, Thackray hit one straight to Phil at cover and they were 65 for 2. He had scored all 22 runs in the partnership in just 13 minutes. After Bayes had come in and hit a 6 over long on in the same over, he was out cutting a shot to the Hax fielding at point. That was 71 for 3, and it became 71 for 4 2 overs later, the 21st, when Blacklock nudged another DJ seamer into Tiff’s gloves. And DJ struck again in his next over when opener Thompson hit one up in the air, and Connor running round at extra cover took a good catch. 79 for 5, and DJ was turning the match on his own with 4 of the 5 wickets to fall in just 3 of his overs. Still he wasn’t done because his next over accounted for captain Underwood with another tickle into Tiff’s gloves. 85 for 6. That was 5 wickets in 4 consecutive overs. Surely he couldn’t get another wicket in his next over, could he? Oh yes he could!! Sam Newman with 11 to his name including boundaries off Hax and Corey at the other end, went for another big hit and the ball went up in the air to be safely pouched by Connor again this time at deep mid on. That was 99 for 7. His next over was a maiden. The over after that, the 30th, and Connor got a wicket when his inswinging late cutter was misjudged by Carter who was trapped in front of his wickets and given out by his own man. That was 104 for 8. Still DJ wasn’t finished as his next over accounted for Louie Harper who drove up to extra cover where Boo held on to a comfortable catch. 106 for 9 and surely it would be all over in a matter of minutes. But last pair Ben Magson and David Holt had other ideas, and defied our bowlers with dogged defending and resolute scoring shots. Singles were taken, Holt glanced DJ to fine leg for 4 and Magson stroked Connor to the cover boundary. Their shots defied their lowly position in the batting order. DJ bowled his 12 overs finishing with 7 for 41, and started to bowl a 13th before being stopped by the scorers. Beaver replaced him for the 37th over, and his 1st delivery produced the all important wicket when Holt feathered it to keeper Tiff again. Kirkby were all out for 125 and Seamer had won by 20 runs. DJ led our players off the field to a generous round of applause from both sides, followed by the customary handshakes.
This was a massive win for our boys against the team challenging us for the title. Our batsmen got us off to a great start with captain Tiff leading the way, but there must be concern for the way we collapsed after the 2nd wicket went down. 28 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. They say every bowler has his day, and this time it was DJ’s turn with a fantastic match winning bowling performance. Backed up by good fielding and 8 catches well taken, including 3 by Tiff behind the sticks, it also brought about a 2nd batting collapse as Kirkby lost their last 8 wickets for 54 runs. This match will live long in the memory and augers well for our remaining 4 matches. We are now 13 points clear at the top. It’s a straight march to the title, surely? Let’s not get too carried away!!
