Wykeham 2nd XI v Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Seamer & Irton CC 2nd XI on Sat 13 Aug 2016 at 1.30pm
Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Lost by 14 runs

Match report Wykeham won the toss and chose to bat sending out Andy Shepherdson and Scott Wardman to open. Beaver started at the far end and Scotty square drove his last ball to the point boundary 5 for 0. There then followed 3 maidens 2 by Connor. 3 boundaries from Scotty's bat followed in the next 2 overs then 2 more maidens. Shep then tickled Beaver to the fine leg boundary in the 9th over and Wardman hit Connor through cover for 4 in the 10th. Both batsmen hit boundaries in the 11th off Beaver and the score had reached 41 for 0. Connor bowled 2 more maidens in his next 3 overs, in between which Scotty hit 2 boundaries after having been dropped behind. Corey replaced Beaver conceding 6 off his 1st 2 overs, but got the all important breakthrough in his 3rd, the 18th. Wardman drove him for 2 consecutive boundaries, but 2 balls later hit one up in the air and Corey standing under it safely pouched the catch. 65 for 1, and Wardman had scored 44 of them inc 10 boundaries. Shep was batting soundly and hit Josh Mac for 2 boundaries in the 19th over. He followed this up with 2 more boundaries in the next 2 overs, before finally succumbing to Corey for 36 in the 22nd over. He steered one up in the air at backward square leg where Beaver ran round to take the catch, and 86 for 2. After steering singles, Dale Corcoran finally found the boundary hitting Josh Mac through cover in the 25th over. John Hoggarth hit Phil to the pavilion boundary next over, and Corcoran fell for 9 runs to a Josh googly in the over after that with his stumps being dislodged. That was 97 for 3. Hoggarth was hogging the bowling and hitting boundaries in the 29th 30th and 31st overs. He was forming a partnership with Ian Johnson who was stroking and nudging singles. Following further Hoggarth boundaries in the 33rd and 35th overs, it was eventually broken in the 38th over for 45 runs when Johnson drove Phil to mid on and Rob Lazenby took the catch. He had made 8 and the score was 142 for 4. Ian Thompson came in and hit the 2nd ball faced to mid wicket for 4. Phil struck again in his next over, the 40th when another off cutter cleaned Hoggarth up for 39, and 155 for 5. 2 overs later and young Tom Poor was heading for the pavilion after tickling another Phil delivery into keeper Tiff's gloves. Tom's father Richard was out in the last over when Beaver cleaned him up for 5, and Tommo hit a couple of 2's to finish unbeaten on 22. The innings closed on 179 for 7 with Phil being the best bowler with 3 for 31 from 11 overs.
It was a lovely sunny afternoon as Corey and Captain Tiff went out to open for the reply. Corey was soon in his stride hitting James Wilson for boundaries to cover point, square leg and a 6 over mid wicket into the sheep field. What a start, 14 for 0 after the 1st over. Unfortunately, he tried to continue in the 2nd bowled by Thompson but holed out to Corcoran on the mid wicket boundary. Connor joined Tiff in the middle and kept his head on stroking singles and a 3 in the next couple of overs. In the 6th over, he swept Tommo twice to the fine leg boundary, and Tiff followed this with a boundary to backward point in the 7th. After steering Tommo for 2 in the 8th, Connor pushed for another 2 to the offside, but didn't make the 2nd run after Wilson gathered the ball at point and threw in to the keeper. He had made 17 and the score was 41 for 2. In the 10th over, Phil sent a catch back to bowler Thompson but he couldn't hold on to it. Next over and Tiff flashed at an offside Wilson seamer and the ball sped to the gully boundary. With the score on 57 in the 14th over, Phil dollied another Thompson air ball round to Hoggarth at square leg for just 2 singles. We were still ahead of Wykeham on scoring rate, but runs were hard to come by. Dallen was digging in with singles and 2's, so too was Tiff plus a couple of boundaries in the 19th and 20th overs. In the 22nd over bowled by big Scotty, Dallen turned one round his legs for 4 but was given out leg before next ball for 18. That was 93 for 4. Josh Mac came in and promptly hit his 1st ball faced to the cover boundary. From this point, the tempo upped considerably with Josh hitting a straight 4 off Wardman to the sight screen, a 6 into the sheep field at mid wicket and a 4 to square leg, both off Toby Wrightson. However in the 27th over, Tiff was tucked up by an inswinging Wilson seamer and 2 of his stumps were knocked back. He was 4 short of his 50 and the score was 127 for 5. Next over with 3 runs added, Josh fell for 29 when he tried to paddle the ball round to square leg off Wardman but succeeded only in dollying it up again to Hoggarth standing there. Wardman struck again with his next over when Rob Lazenby dollied the ball straight back to him for 3 and 136 for 7. Next ball Gaz Walts pushed straight into Richard Poor's hands at silly mid off, and it was looking like defeat with 36 runs to get and 2 wickets left. But Beaver was in no mood to hang around and built up a partnership with Doc, the pair stroking singles to keep the score moving. Then Beaver launched into Wardman hitting 3 boundaries in the 34th over to take the score to 153 for 8. There was still 11 overs left to get 27 runs and it was looking "on". Beaver hit Wardman to point for another 4 in the 36th over, then Doc broke down with an ankle problem. He couldn't run so Dallen padded up and came on to run for him. The score was 160 for 8. Beaver was playing paceman Wilson out at one end and scoring off Wardman at the other end. Doc was supporting well and limping badly. However it all came to fruition in the 40th over when Captain Thompson brought himself back on to bowl. After refusing an easy single off the 1st ball, Beaver went dancing down the track to meet the 2nd ball, missed it and was stumped by young Tom Poor for a gallant 24. Tony came in and survived 4 balls. Unfortunately, he straight batted the last ball and it cannoned off his bat into the air where bowler Thompson running forward caught it. We were all out for 165 and 14 runs short with 5 overs left. Thompson finished with 4 for 31 off 10 and Wardman 4 for 65 also off 10.
This was a massive disappointment which dropped us down to 3rd place in the table, 1 point behind Wykeham. Some would say we threw this match away with some batsmen getting out to silly shots. It was a nice track with a finely cut outfield so runs were always going to be a plenty. We can't be too disappointed that we let them get 179 runs. It was a very gettable score which we have chased down a few times already this season. It's all about application and keeping your head. Some of us do it very well. Let's hope more can as we go into our last 2 matches. UTS!!
