Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Seamer & Irton CC 2nd XI (Evening) v Cayton A on Thu 09 Jun 2016 at 6.15pm
Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Lost by 19 runs

Match report Cayton won the toss and elected to bat. With the 1st ball of the 2nd over, Beaver followed through and diving to his left took a spectacular one handed catch to dismiss opener Brown for 1. Robin Woodhead came in and smashed 4 boundaries in 6 balls before Beaver pegged back his stumps with the last ball of the same over. That was 23 for 2. Opener K Glave and Paul Pennock wasted no time moving the score along with a succession of boundaries, treating our bowlers with dis-respect, and building a solid partnership worth 47 runs. It was broken in the 8th over when Pennock drove Connor straight to Shish who easily held the catch at cover point. In the next over, Glave skied a Shish chinaman to last minute replacement Ben Mason who was waiting at mid on to take the catch. 2 balls later and Tom Ward mis-timed a legside pull and young Taylor Plant took the catch at square leg. That was 78 for 5. In the 11th over, Shish completely deceived Simon Stubbs with another chinaman to claim his 3rd wicket. Next over and Connor cleaned up the experienced Simon Glave with a special off cutter. In the last over, the 13th, bowled by Shish, John Ward hit a boundary, and next ball drove one straight back to Shish who managed to palm the ball on to the stumps and Mark Nettleton backing up was run out. Our former star batsman Gaz Dixon who had turned up late expecting to watch the match, was pressured into donning his whites, and took to the crease. He fished at a few balls before nudging a single and the innings closed on 104 for 8, John Ward unbeaten on 12. Shish was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 24 from his 4 overs.
Shish then opened the batting with Connor, and immediately hammered 2 boundaries off Tom Ward's 1st over. In the next over, Connor was a gonner when he took a great yahoo at a Woodhead seamer and saw his middle peg lying prostrate on the ground. Tom Ward's 2nd over was a wicket maiden, with Shish slicing into Con Davison's hands at 1st slip for 9. That was 12 for 2. Jimmy G was promoted up the order and after driving the 2nd ball of Tom Ward's next over to the boundary, he succumbed to a straight one and was cleaned up. Enter Captain Bakes who made his intentions clear, smashing the last ball of that over to the mid wicket boundary. In the next, Cameron deftly touched a Woodhead delivery down towards third man, and got 3 for it. Unfortunately he drilled the last ball of that over straight to John Ward at cover. 28 for 4 after 6 overs. The 7th was a good 'un for our captain taking 2 boundaries and 2 doubles from Tom Ward's over, and with 5 wides thrown in for good measure. In the 9th over, Bakes straight drove John Ward for 4, and then saw his stumps shattered when he played all round a straight delivery off the next ball. He had made 24 and the score had moved on to 57 for 5. With 48 needed off 4 overs, it was getting tough for our remaining batsmen. Rob Lazenby who had established himself at the crease overs earlier did his best to up the ante hitting new bowler Nettleton for 6 over the long on boundary, taking the score to 68. Phil Metcalfe who had been at the crease a couple of overs nudging singles tried to make a 2nd run but the throw coming in to the keeper was accurate, and he was run out. 10 runs were scored off the penultimate over, mostly by Rob, leaving 23 runs to get off the final over bowled by John Ward. Beaver was run out off the 2nd ball, Rob added a 2 off the next and was cleaned up 2 balls later, putting an end to the fight. We finished 19 runs short on 85 for 8.
It was never going to be easy against a Cayton team who were more used to playing against our 1st team than our 2nds. Our bowlers did well to restrict them to a modest score in evening league terms, and praise must go to Bakes and Rob for taking the fight to them, but we ultimately ran out of overs and men against their better bowlers. There is enough fight in our team to avoid relegation.
