Match report Captain Bakes won the toss and chose to bat on a well watered pitch which was next to a rock hard one. Josh Lowe was soon fending off short deliveries from Tom Watson which were rearing up shoulder height. Off the 9th delivery after 4 wides had been bowled, Josh put his arm up in front of his helmet, and the ball ricocheted off his glove, spooned up in the air straight to Ricky Nock stood well back at 2nd slip. The pace of J Long at the bottom end was too much for new batsman Boo and after 4 balls his stumps were shattered. That was 8 for 2. The Hax came in and wasted no time in cracking the 1st delivery faced to the long off boundary. Watson was bowling erratic in his 2nd over with 3 wides after Hax had stroked a 2 and a single. Opener Josh Mac then hit a boundary wide of cover point up the hill, but the last ball of the over was stroked to mid off. The fielder gathered cleanly, threw to the keeper and Josh was run out going for a quick single. 29 for 3. Captain Bakes joined Hax at the crease. The 5th over bowled by Harry Whelan started with 5 no balls, then Bakes cracked a couple of 4's. Morgan Grunwell's 1st over, the 6th started with a wide. Off the 2nd ball, Hax was deceived by movement off the seam and saw his stumps disturbed for 9. That was 51 for 4. 5 legal balls later, Bakes holed out to Nick Gibson at mid on for 11. The next few overs saw a procession of our batsmen coming and going without any addition to the scoreboard showing 54 runs. Rob Lazenby was bowled by Whelan, and Bareoo dollied a simple catch back to the bowler. Doc flashed at a rising Grunwell delivery off the next ball and nicked it to the keeper. So too did Gaz Walters in Grunwell's next over, the 10th. Young Tommy Hoggarth was last man in, and off his 4th ball faced clipped a glorious drive to the mid wicket boundary which any opener would have been proud of. The innings closed on 61 when young Tommy succumbed to a slower Grunwell delivery and was bowled. Grunwell finished with 6 for 9 from 3 overs and 5 balls.
Openers Nick Gibson and new signing fron Ganton, Doug Rainton, started with gusto stroking shots all round the ground, and finding the boundary every over. One Gibson offside cut hit young Taylor Plant on the upper arm, fielding at gully. The poor lad went down in a heap and was surrounded and comforted by his team mates. The batsmen were scoring at a run a ball off the 1st couple of overs, then increased the tempo thereafter, never looking troubled. They had reached 46 after 5 overs bowled by the Hax and Bareoo. With the winning post in sight, the batsmen reduced the tempo taking 6 off Josh Mac's 1st flighted over, and 5 off Hax's 4th. With just 3 needed for victory, Rainton lifted his head to another Josh Mac googly and spooned the ball well up in the air. Captain Bakes barely had to move to pouch the catch in his gloves. A couple of singles were added before Gibson stroked Boo's 3rd ball to the leg side for the winning run.
Unfortunately, Seamer turned out a weakened team for this their 2nd visit to Cloughton in 3 weeks, and were punished by a stronger team in all departments. If we continue to be hit by injuries and unavailability in future weeks, a drop back down to division C from whence we came is the most likely outcome.
