Match report In the absence of Captain Bakes, Josh Mac won the toss and decided to bat. He opened with Anoosh as his partner. Paceman Phil Pickard bowled 3 wides in the 1st over with 4 runs off the bat. Dan Simpson bowled the 2nd over and Josh Mac drove him to the long on boundary off the 1st ball. However, Josh mis-judged the next delivery and was cleaned up, with the score on 11. Boo pushed a couple of 2's, and at the end of Pickard's next over, Anoosh attempted to hook a short ball and was caught at square leg for 2. Boo and Phil then doubled the score to 34 where off the last ball of the 6th over, Phil played inside a Simpson seamer and saw his leg stump knocked back. 4 balls later in Pickard's next over, Boo departed when he scooped a drive to Farrow standing at mid off. That was 36 for 4. There then followed a stand between Josh Broadhead and Bareoo, with both batsmen hitting boundaries in Thomson's 1st over, Josh square driving to point and Bareoo to mid wicket. The score was 56 for 4 after 9 overs. In the next over, Josh turned a Daley Wharton delivery round his legs to the deep backward square boundary, and 3 more runs were taken that over. Thomson bowled the 11th over, and off the 5th ball, Bareoo pushed forward and was out of his crease when Jack Pickard took the ball and whipped the bails off. The partnership had put on 33 runs in 21 minutes. That brought in Captain Bakes, but it was Josh B doing most of the scoring. In the 12th over he creamed a drive to the extra cover boundary, and followed that with a big 6 to cow corner. But 2 balls later, he hit a shot towards mid on, set off for a single and collided with his partner. The fielder threw to the keeper and the bails were off before he could get back. That was 87 for 6, and with 2 overs left, we needed to get to 100 runs at the very least. 3 runs and a wide were taken from the 13th over before a Thomson delivery dislodged Jimmy G's stumps. Singles and 2's were taken from the last over bowled by Wharton, and Seamer finished on 104 for 7 with no Sherburn bowler taking 3 wickets or more. Josh B was making his 2nd team debut for us tonight and his 31 runs was the mainstay of our innings.
In bright and warm sunlight, Sherburn opened with Craig Sanderson and Phil Pickard. The duo started brightly taking 12 off Jimmy G's 1st over. Worse was to follow with Pickard plundering Beaver for 18 runs and a wide, with boundaries to cow corner, backward square leg twice and a 6 over square leg. Sanderson then hit 2 boundaries and a 2 in Jimmy's 2nd over before nudging one into keeper Bakes' gloves for 15. The partnership had realised 41 runs. DJ replaced Beaver to bowl the 4th over, and Pickard immediately glanced one to the fine leg boundary. Jordan Wharton also found the boundaries at long off and 3rd man. That was 57 after just 4 overs. It was double delight for Jimmy G in his next over, the 5th, when 1st Jordan Wharton drove into the safe hands of Phil at mid off, then Dan Simpson found Anoosh lurking at cover for a fine catch. That was 61 for 3, and it soon became 61 for 4 when Thomson came and went, bowled by DJ for nought. 4 runs were conceeded off Josh Mac's slow tweakers in the 7th over, while DJ went for 15 in the 8th; Daley Wharton smacking him for a 6 over long on, plus another boundary. That bumped the score up to 82 for 4. Josh Mac was bowling tidily, conceeding just 1 run off the 9th over. The 10th over was bowled by Anoosh and Phil Pickard planted his 1st ball over the boundary for 4. 2 balls later and Daley was heading for the new pavilion having been cleaned up. That was 88 for 5. 3 singles were taken in the 11th over bowled by Josh Mac before Phil Pickard reached his 50 with a sweet 6 to the old pavilion at long on. Next ball it was all over as another Pickard hit cleared the boundary line in a similar spot to the previous ball. He finished unbeaten on 56, and Jimmy G was our best bowler with 3 for 26 from his 3 overs.
Sherburn wrapped up this win for them with more than 3 overs to spare, and gained revenge for our victory over them in May. With the team we had, we should have done better. 104 was a reasonable target once again to set our opponents on a poor wicket, but our bowlers were punished for too many loose deliveries enabling their batsmen to get off to a cracking start. Despite their bowlers bowling 12 wides to our 3, they were always well ahead of the required run rate, and never looked likely to fail with wickets in hand. We badly need a win to escape the relegation places, but next match is Flixton A. It's going to be difficult!
