Match report Captain Bakes won the toss and elected to bat. After a cautious 1st over, Davy G and Bakes began to score freely. Young bowler Andy Eustace was cut for boundaries to 3rd man and gully by Davy, and Bakes nicely stroked a cover drive boundary off James Wilson. In the next over, Davy carved Eustace to the cow corner and mid wicket boundaries, and the score reached 30 after 4 overs. The tempo increased with Davy hitting Wilson to the long on and extra cover boundaries in the 5th over, and tickling one round his legs to the fine leg boundary also. Scott Wardman came on at the pavilion end, and Bakes planted his 2nd ball for 6 over the long on boundary. Davy also drove one over the extra cover boundary near the shed, and 14 had been taken from it in total. Wardman's 2nd over, the 8th was another good 'un for our boys with Bakes finding the boundaries at backward square leg and extra cover, the score moving rapidly to 78 after 8 overs. The 1st ball of the 9th bowled by Dan Bateson saw the breakthrough when Bakes lifted his head on the drive and steered the ball into Mark Vasey's hands at cover. Phil came in, stroked a couple of singles, and departed next over when he too lofted one up, this time to Bateson's clutches at long off. Connor came in and paddled the next ball round to backward square leg for 4. In Bateson's next over, the 11th, 5 singles were taken, one taking Davy to his 50, and Connor smoked one to the cover boundary. Davy then hit 2 boundaries in consecutive balls to the shed and cow corner at the start of Wardman's 4th over, the 12th. Connor got in on the act with a pull to mid wicket for 4, right of the shed. Unfortunately, he got a little nick to the next ball and keeper Johnson safely took the catch. Brother Boo came in and hit the next ball to cow corner for 4, which had taken the score to 115 for 3. Back came Basher Wilson to bowl his 4th over, and immediately struck when Boo played forward and dollied a catch back to him as he followed through. 3 balls later and Davy's innings came to an end when he lofted one up to Graves on the deep mid wicket boundary. That was 117 for 5. Anoosh came to the crease and nudged his 1st ball faced to the fine leg boundary. Mark Jackson bowled the last over, and after a 3rd ball wide, hit the stumps of Gaz Walts who had made a single. The last ball ended with Anoosh being run out going for a 2nd run off a DJ hit. The final score was 128 for 7.
The skies were brightening as our boys took to the field with Ezra Pashby and former Cayton 1st teamer Mark Jackson opening the Wykeham innings. Jimmy's 1st over was punished by Ezra hitting 4 boundaries and a 2. The batsmen took mainly singles off Anoosh's 1st over and 25 runs were on the board after 2 overs. Jimmy's 2nd over was better with just a 4 from Ezra, a drive to long on. Anoosh's 2nd over conceded 8 runs with Ezra cutting one to the 3rd man boundary. Jackson found the point boundary in Jimmy's 3rd over, the 5th, and Ezra stroked a 3 into the outfield. Anoosh conceded 5 runs off his 3rd over and DJ replacing Jimmy conceded 6 runs off his over. Anoosh got the breakthrough in the 8th over when Ezra lofted one up to mid wicket where Doc took a straight forward catch. He had made 43 of the 64 run opening partnership. DJ bowled the 9th over and Jackson stroked him to the extra cover boundary. New batsman John Hoggarth then drove him to long on for 4. Connor replaced Anoosh at the village end and with his 7th ball knocked back Hoggarth's middle peg. That was 83 for 2. Jackson was stroking the ball with ease and in the 11th over he hit DJ to long on, mid wicket and the shed at extra cover. Mark Vasey was a spectator at the other end as Jackson found the boundary again in Connor's 2nd, the 12th, but our left armer got his man when Vasey's stumps were shattered. That was 105 for 3 and 24 runs were needed off the last 2 overs. On came Beaver to bowl at Graves, who hit the 1st ball to square leg where Phil gathered the ball threw in to keeper Bakes and Jackson was run out for 48. 2 balls later and Graves nicked one into Bakes's gloves for a duck. Suddenly it was 107 for 5. Ian Johnson came in and immediately hit Beaver through gully and point for boundaries, and the score moved on to 119 at the end of the over. So 10 runs were needed off the final over bowled by Connor, but we were down to 10 men for it when Boo had to leave the field feeling unwell. The 1st 3 balls were dot one dot, then their square leg umpire signalled no ball for the 4th. Further singles were added for the next 2 balls, so Wykeham wanted 6 off the last 3 balls......very exciting!! Then Wardman pushed for a quick single, Johnson set off, Connor gathered the ball down the track, turned, ran back and broke the wicket before Johnson could get back. But Connor's delight soon turned to despair as 1st he bowled a wide then saw Wardman club his 7th ball to the big tree at mid wicket for 4. The scores were tied, and the big fella hit the last ball to Doc at mid wicket, who unfortunately couldn't get the ball in before the single was completed, and Wykeham had won by 4 wickets.
A last ball win or loss is always exciting, but this was a chance to move above the relegation places gone. With 2 matches left to play against 2 of the top sides, we need a vital win. So c'mon big push.....we can do it!!
