Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Seamer & Irton CC 2nd XI (Evening) v Cloughton A on Tue 02 Aug 2016 at 6.15pm
Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 53 runs

Match report Captain Bakes won the toss and elected to bat. He sent out Davy G and Corey amidst overcast skies. They got us off to a cracking start and boundaries were flowing from both bats. 11 runs were scored from Gary Jordan’s 1st over and 19 runs from Morgan Grunwell’s 1st over with Davy hitting 3 boundaries and helped by 6 wides. Unfortunately in the 3rd over, Davy sliced one up in the air and Couch took the pouch at gully, He had made 17 of the 32 run partnership. Gaz Lawton came in and played 5 dot balls. The 4th over and Corey hit Grunwell for a boundary and a 6 into the cornfield at square leg. He was then dropped at mid wicket before Gaz Lawton heaved a 4 to cow corner. That was 47 for 1. Richard Ward bowled the 5th over and conceded 10 runs in singles and 2’s, and Ben Luntley made the 2nd breakthrough in the 6th over when Corey heaved one straight down the throat of Grunwell on the mid wicket boundary for 26. Ward then conceded 15 runs bowling the 7th over, including a 6 by Josh Broadhead over long on, and the score had moved on to 76 for 2. Both batsmen were stroking the singles and 2’s, and Gaz finished his innings with a 3 in the 9th over bowled by Chris Malthouse. That’s when he danced down the pitch, missed the ball and was stumped by their keeper Stuart Harris for a patient 15. That was 93 for 3. John King took a pounding in the 10th over, with Josh hitting a boundary and the Hax hitting 2 boundaries and a 6 to square leg. Unfortunately off the last ball, Hax hit one up in the air and King took the catch off his own bowling. That was 113 for 4. Captain Bakes came to the crease and immediately launched into the last 2 overs hitting 38 runs including 5 boundaries and 2 6’s, in just 8 minutes. With Josh adding 2 singles in this time, he finished on 28 not out and the team score was 154 for 4. Surely this was too challenging a score for the Cloughton boys to overhaul?
The skies were darkening as Pete Goodenough and Stuart Harris went out to bat. Goodenough stroked a boundary in both of the opening overs, ending on 11 without loss. Jimmy’s 2nd over produced a wicket with his last ball when Goodenough steered one straight to Gaz Lawton at mid off. That was 18 for1 and quickly became 18 for 2 when Harris was adjudged leg before by one of his own players off Anoosh. 4 runs were added before our latest recruit struck again. Peter Couch top edged one, and new keeper Shish running backwards took the catch in his gloves. He was out for a duck and the visitors were 22 for 3. Rob Lazenby bowled the 5th over tying Ricky Nock down before knocking back his off peg with the 7th delivery. Captain Bakes bowled the 6th with 7 dot balls and a boundary 4 by Gary Jordan. Ben Luntley stroked Rob for 4 but Jordan heaved one down to long on where Gaz was waiting to take his 2nd catch. That was 33 for 5, and it was drizzling quite heavily. Bakes then conceded another 9 runs off his bowling. Corey conceded 6 runs off his 1st, the 9th including a 4 to mid wicket by King. These 2 batsmen then upped the tempo and Josh B was smashed for 21 runs in the 10th including 2 x 6’s to square leg and mid wicket by Luntley. Corey was hit for 18 runs in the 11th but managed to hit King’s stumps with his 7th ball to leave the visitors on 87 for 6. Anoosh was recalled to bowl the last over and conceded 13 runs, with Luntley hitting the last ball for 6 to bring up his 50. Cloughton had finished on 101 for 6 as the rain was getting heavier.
This was our best result of the season with only 10 men against the team lying 2nd in the league and already guaranteed promotion. True they were missing a few key players from the sides that beat us twice at their place in May and June. But we put out a strong team and our batting display showed with ample contributions from Corey, Josh B and Captain Bakes, and backed up by teen scores from our other 3 batsmen. No Seamer bowler took more than 2 wickets, and barring a late flurry of runs our opening bowlers did well. So at this moment in time, we are waiting to see if the 3 points gained tonight will be enough to save us from relegation. Ooooh……..the suspense is killing me!!!

Late update – We have been relegated!
