Match report Captain Bakes won the toss and chose to bat on a poor wicket with variable bounce. Corey took 2 boundaries off the 1st over, and together with Josh Lowe moved the score along with a succession of singles, and a few extras from their bowlers. At the end of the 4th over with the score on 25, Josh played inside a Luntley straight one and was bowled. Josh McNeil came to the wicket and immediately launched himself into their bowlers with a sweet 6 up the mid wicket hill, a couple of boundaries, singles and two's. Corey was still stroking singles, and the score moved rapidly on to 59 after 7 overs. The next over was bowled by Mr Goodenough, and Josh seeing his chance to score quick runs danced down the wicket and was stumped by their keeper for 28. He had only been in 11 minutes. 3 balls later, Corey went for a quick single and was run out for 22. That was 61 for 3. More firepower was needed from our remaining batsmen, and 2 overs later Connor duly obliged also clearing the mid wicket boundary up the hill. Together with Phil Metcalfe, the pair were stroking singles with ease, and moved the score along to 82 in the 11th over. Then Phil misjudged a Codling effort and saw his middle and off stumps broken. Captain Bakes came in and nicked the 1st ball faced down to the 3rd man boundary. 2 balls later and Connor also found the boundary. In Goodenough's next over, the 12th, Connor hit one up into the covers and was caught for 16. 3 balls later, his brother Cameron sliced a short ball straight into the willing hands at gully. That was 94 for 6. The last over bowled by Codling started with a couple of wides, then Bakes nicked one into the keepers gloves. A couple of scrambled singles later and the Seamer innings was over at 101 for 7. Mr Goodenough, true to his name had 3 for 19 off 3 overs.
101 was not a big total to defend, and the Seamer bowlers needed to bowl tightly. Staxton Saturday batsman Nick Gibson and Ben Luntley started cautiously and only 1 run was conceded off DJ's 1st over. Beaver however at the other end was bowling loose and Gibson planted him for 6 over the square leg boundary up the hill. DJ kept it tight and conceded only 2 runs off his next over. Cloughton were 18 for 0 after 4 overs and behind the clock. After conceding a boundary to Gibson in his next over, DJ got the breakthrough 3 balls later when Gibson nicked one wide of keeper Bakes who dived to his right, juggled with the ball and held on to the catch. That was 24 for 1. In the next over, the 6th, Luntley took 7 runs off Beaver, but with the penultimate ball, Ricky Nock misjudged an inswinger and was cleaned up for a duck. After 7 overs Cloughton were only on 40 for 2, and really needed to up the pace. Ali Caw came on to bowl and the batsmen laid into him hitting 14 runs off his 1st over. Worse was to follow when Corey came on at the bottom end, Luntley hitting him for 5 boundaries and a 2. That was 76 for 2. Ali's next over and the batsmen plundered another 11 runs. Connor bowled the 11th and conceded 10 runs in singles and 2's. With the last ball of that over, he clean bowled opener Luntley for a match winning 64 runs, after spending 52 minutes at the crease. 4 runs were needed off the 12th over and Johnson duly hit Ali for 2 boundaries off the 1st 2 balls to seal the win by 7 wickets.
Seamer were in a winning position after 7 overs in the field, but the match was turned on its head by the end of the 9th over with 36 runs conceded. After that, it was plain sailing for the Cloughton batsmen with wickets in hand and the Seamer fielders finding it hard to see the ball in the gathering gloom. Loose bowling was punished and the batsmen completed the win with just under 2 overs left. Credit must be given to Seamer's best bowler DJ who made the batsmen play and miss with his 1 for 17 off 4 overs.
Have Cloughton set the standard for this kind of cup competition in the higher league, or is it a one off blip? Only time will tell.
