Match report On a grey cloudy overcast evening, Captain Tiff won the toss and chose to bat. To the middle went Corey and Josh Mac to fend off the fast pace of Andy Eustace and the slower flighted deliveries of Josh Bryant. After nudging singles in the 1st 2 overs, the pair began to find the boundaries; Corey hitting 3 in succession. After 5 overs the pair were still together on 23. However, in Bryant's 3rd over they both departed in successive balls. Corey found Tom Bruce well inside the long off boundary, and Josh Mac looked back to find his off peg disturbed. At the start of Eustace's 4th over, Captain Tiff faced his 1st ball and smote it to the boundary. The 2nd was a rising delivery which he attempted to cut down through the gully area but only succeeded in finding the tall figure of Dave Pearson standing there. That was 28 for 3, but Hax plundered a boundary off the last ball. Josh Lowe became Bryant's 3rd victim in the next over when he dollied a catch to Eustace at mid wicket, and that was 34 for 4. Mike Graves replaced Eustace at the village end and with his 4th ball accounted for the Hax who also saw his off peg knocked back. Bryant was replaced by Tom Bruce at the pavilion end, and Boo despatched his 3rd ball to the boundary with a square drive. Singles were taken by both batsman, and off the last ball of the next over, Boo was beaten for pace by Graves. That was 51 for 6 after 11 overs. There then followed a period of consolidation with young Harrison and Rob Lazenby moving the score along nicely with singles and 2's off casual bowlers Briggs and Colling aided with a number of wides. Bruce was brought back to bowl the 16th over, and Harrison drove his 2nd ball to the boundary. Unfortunately, he played all round the 4th ball and was bowled. That was 78 for 7 and the partnership had realised 27 runs. Graves was brought back for the 17th and cleaned Rob up for 15 with his 4th delivery, and no addition to the score at the end of the over. The last over was bowled by Bryant, and Gaz Walters hit a rising shot to Bruce stood well back at extra cover. The penultimate ball was hit to the boundary by Beaver and Seamer finished on 86 for 9. Bryant for the visitors finished with 4 for 18 off 5 overs, and Graves 3 for 7 off 3 overs.
The Hax made immediate inroads into Wykeham's reply when he got Bruce to tickle his 2nd delivery into keeper Tiff's gloves, 3 coming off the remaining over. Unfortunately Beaver received some stick at the other end when Steve Clegg hit him for a boundary and a 6 over square leg, and a further 6 runs off the over. That was 19 for 1. It became 21 for 2 in Hax's 2nd over when Bryant found Tiff's gloves with a little nick. Corey bowled the 4th over and Clegg smote his 5th ball for 4, but Corey hit back pegging him with his 6th. That was 25 for 3 after 4 overs. Hax conceded 2 singles off his 3rd over, and Ethan Pashby hit a boundary off Corey's next. The Hax struck again in the 7th over when Ethan found Josh Mac at mid off. Harrison came on to bowl the 8th, starting with 2 wides. He bowled 5 tidy deliveries and with his last ball just clipped the leg stump of Sam Colling who had been at the crease for 20 minutes for his 2 runs. At 37 for 5 after 8 overs it was looking shaky for the visitors. The light was drawing in and the umpires were signalling wides on leg side deliveries. 4 runs were conceded off Hax's last over, 2 being wides. Harrison struck again in the 10th over when he found Kev Thompson's stumps, but big Dave Pearson found the boundary and a 2 by the end of the over. That made it 49 for 6 and Seamer were in with a shout. Pearson was playing his 1st match of the season after a foot operation, and his running was uneasy at first. But he soon got into his stride hitting Harrison for 6 in his next over. It was 62 for 6 after 12 overs. Josh Mac conceded 2 runs off the 13th and Corey conceded 8 runs off the 14th. Ezra and big Dave looked to be building a winning partnership but it was broken in the 16th when a short ball from Corey was hit up in the air and the Hax running in from short mid wicket pouched the catch. That was 78 for 7 with 9 needed off 2 overs and 4 balls. Ezra hit 4 of them 2 balls later. Mike Graves finished it off hitting 2 boundaries from the 2nd and 4th ball of Josh Mac's next over, the 17th. Big Dave had scored 25 and Ezra was unbeaten on 16. The Hax was our best bowler with 3 for 13 from 5 overs.
Our lads gave a good account of themselves against a team playing 2 Saturday leagues higher. We were not expected to win, but made a good game of it with some tight bowling and good fielding. The batting let us down a bit, but we can be proud of our efforts. With 20 runs or so more, it could have been a different story. Wykeham progress to the semi final, and may win the cup. Good luck to them!
