Forge Valley 2nd XI v Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Seamer & Irton CC 2nd XI on Sat 06 May 2017 at 1.30pm
Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 3 wkts

Match report On an overcast afternoon, Captain Connor won the toss and put the home side in to bat. Openers Gary Gibson and Sean Topham started resolutely both scoring boundaries off the Hax. But our big man struck back with the last ball of his 2nd over when he penetrated Topham's guard with a yorker which knocked back his stumps. That was 14 for 1. New batsman White stroked a cover drive for 4 off Con in the 6th over but our captain got his man next ball when he cleaned him up. Next man Reddish scored an extra cover boundary in the 8th over, but Con tempted him next ball into an uppish shot through mid wicket which Jake clung on to with both arms outstretched above his head. That was 29 for 3. In the next over, Hax was hit for 2 boundaries by the ever solid Gibson. Keeper Griff appealed loudly when John Flinton appeared to nick one off Connor's next over, but the umpire turned it down. However, next ball Griff went mental at another nick and this time the umpire gave it. That was 41 for 4. Ricky Webster joined Gibson and the pair looked to consolidate the Valley innings. Hax was hit for 10 by Gibson in the 11th over, and also by Webster in the 15th over, while Con went for 10 in the 16th over. That took the score to 78 for 4. Josh Mac and Jake came on to bowl, but initially couldn't stop the odd boundary, though overall did slow down the scoring rate. The breakthrough came in the 22nd over when Webster went for another yahoo and Jake knocked back his off peg. He had made 20 and the score 97 for 5. In the next over, the 23rd, Chris Jackson stroked a 2 to bring up the team 100, but next ball was deceived by a quick delivery from Josh which the batsman skied and Josh standing under it caught it cleanly. In the 25th over, Josh struck again when he deceived batsman Fox with his "wrong un" striking the stumps. That was 106 for 7. L Calvert came to the crease but opener Gibson was looking solid and farming the bowling hitting further boundaries off Josh and Jake. But the innings was wrapped up in the 29th over when firstly Calvert was bowled by a Josh googly, then Ali nicked a quicker delivery into Corey's hands at slip. Dan Boyle was then cleaned up 1st ball to leave Valley all out for 122. Opener Gibson had carried his bat for 102 minutes for 72 not out and our Josh finished with amazing figures of 5 for 19 off 6 overs and 4 balls, his last 3 wickets coming off those 4 balls. Captain Con gave good support with 3 for 28 from 8 overs.
Rob L was on his way back to the pavilion after Ali's 3rd ball trapped him leg before for 0. And Ali struck again in the 3rd over when he knocked back Corey's leg peg, also for 0. That was 5 for 2, not a good start. Connor struck the 1st boundary in the same over creaming one through cover. Dallen and Connor held firm in the next overs against tight Valley bowling. The 7th and 8th were maidens but Dallen hit 2 straight drives off Ali to the boundary in the 9th over, before skying one to Topham running round at mid on for 13. That was 25 for 3, which quickly became 25 for 4 when Josh Mac was cleaned up by a Calvert seamer off the 2nd ball faced. Connor was playing a captain's innings and in Calvert's next over, the 12th, he top edged one over gully for 4 and followed this with a smote through the covers for 4. Now followed some more tight Valley bowling in which maidens were played out and the scoring rate dropped, but with Phil stroking the singles, we were always in with a shout. In the 17th over, Connor drove one to the extra cover boundary off left armer Jackson to open up play again. But in the 19th over, Connor hit a rising drive towards the deep extra cover boundary where Webster was waiting to take a comfortable catch. That was 45 for 5. The Hax joined Phil at the wicket and the pair dug in resolutely maintaining solid defence while punishing the bad ball. One such ball was straight driven to the boundary by Hax off Topham in the 22nd over. Phil had a let off in the next over when he hit Jackson in the air to long off but the catch was spilled. It wasn't until the 27th over when Hax swept 2 boundaries to square and long leg, and another in the 30th over that the score had moved on to 71 for 5. This was an extremely important partnership, which produced a further 12 runs in 3 more overs, this included Phil's 1st boundary, an exquisite cover drive. Opening bowler Ali had been re-introduced into the attack, and his 2nd over produced the breakthrough when one nipped back off the seam and cleaned our Hax up for a patient 20. This was to be an important turning point. Griff came in and wasted no time in getting on with the job. He powered the 2nd ball faced off Fox high into the air, which sailed over the brick wall at cow corner narrowly missing the bungalow conservatory. Next ball, he despatched another mighty hit over long on which cleared the boundary hedge and landed in the road. Following a no ball, Griff despatched the next to the onside boundary to completely change the game in our favour on 102 for 6. However in the next over, Griff went for another yahoo, and Ali pegged him. Jake came in and kept his head stroking doubles to edge us closer. Phil stroked a couple of boundaries in the next few overs and we were on 116 for 7. Jackson was brought back to bowl the 39th over, and Jake wasted no time in creaming 2 legside boundaries to win the match for us. Phil had compiled a steady 27 not out with Jake unbeaten on 13. Opener Ali was their best bowler with 5 for 30 from his 12 overs.
Congratulations to our lads for a fine all round performance with some telling contributions from our middle order. Josh started things off with a fine bowling performance backed up by Connor. After early dismissals, Connor got things moving with 24, the partnership between Phil and Hax was invaluable and worth 38. Although it took time, it laid the groundwork for Griff and Jake to finish the match off with a flourish. We missed a further batting point by 1 run, but 16 points gives us our 1st win of the season and sets us up nicely for the ensuing games ahead. We play our 1st game on home grass next Saturday, and can't wait to inflict more damage on the visiting team. UTS!!
