Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 7 wkts

Match report Seamer were led today by Phil in the absence of Connor and Hax. Cayton won the toss and chose to bat on a nice sunny but rather windy day. Lee Petitt and Shakil Iqbal both found the boundary in DJ's 1st 2 overs, whilst Beaver bowled 2 maidens in his 1st 3 overs. DJ got the breakthrough in his 3rd over when left hander Petitt was cleaned up by an inswinging seamer for 9, with the score on 17. DJ hit the stumps again in his next over, the 7th when their captain Mark Sayers played the wrong line. That was 21 for 2. Next over and Beaver got rid of Callum Lumsdon by knocking back his stumps as well, with 1 run added. In the 9th over, Iqbal sent a skier to mid wicket but our fielder was blinded by the sun and the chance went begging. In the next over, Iqbal hooked a short Beaver delivery to square leg, and 2 overs later top edged Beaver down to 3rd man for another boundary. At the other end, Richard Seastron was defending stoutly, and nudging the odd single. Beaver was replaced in the 14th over and Griff bowled a maiden. In the 17th over, Iqbal was given another lifeline when he was dropped at point off DJ. Next over and Seastron nudged a Griff delivery through gully to the boundary, and the partnership had doubled the score to 46 for 3. The partnership was eventually broken in the 21st over when Iqbal got a big tickle off another DJ seamer and new keeper Dazzler took the catch. That was 52 for 4. In the next over, Seastron was sent walking after also being cleaned up, this time by Griff, and 52 for 5. Big Willie Wood came in and 2 balls later cut Griff through gully for 4. DJ's last over was a maiden, so too was Griff's next. Beaver was brought back for the 25th over and Wood planted his last delivery for 6 into the hedge at wide mid wicket. Archie was introduced for the 26th over and started with a maiden. Wood then got stuck into Beaver hitting boundaries through extra cover and to cow corner, and with 2 no balls, the score had reached 73 for 5. Keith Meatheringham had been at the crease for 31 minutes when he scored his 1st run in Archie's next over, the 28th. Wood then creamed another drive through extra cover for 4. But it was double delight for Archie 2 balls later when Wood on 22 drove one up into the covers where Beaver held on to the catch. Next delivery and Robbie Hill was adjudged leg before by their umpire Bob Cowton. 78 for 6 had quickly become 78 for 7. In the 31st over, Beaver pegged back Kevin Petitt's stumps, and 83 for 8. Young Archie then mopped up the tail with a double wicket maiden. Firstly Meatheringham got a thick edge and Dazzler stretched out a hand to take a smart catch. Then last man Josh Smith found Phil at extra cover for another catch, and it was 83 all out. Archie had finished with remarkable figures of 4 overs 2 maidens 4 wickets for 7 runs. He was well backed up by DJ bowling his 12 overs straight through taking 3 wickets for 26 runs.
The wind was as strong as ever as Dallen and Griff went to the middle. Dallen took a single off Hill's 1st ball and Griff was dropped at mid on. In the 2nd over by Lumsdon, Dallen drove him through extra cover for 4 following up with a 3 into the vacant outfield. Griff then powered a 6 over the hedge into the cabbage field. It took 2-3 minutes to find the ball. In Hill's next over, Griff hit towards cow corner and the batsmen ran 3. Lumsdon then got more treatment when Griff hit him for 6 into the same spot in the cabbage field as before. It took even longer to find the ball this time. 2 balls later and the ball was despatched to wide long on for 4. That was 31 for 0 after just 4 overs. Hill started the 5th over with a wide and 3 wides before Dallen top edged the penultimate delivery down to 3rd man where Meatheringham ran forward and held on to the catch. It was 36 for 1 and a good start. Meatheringham then replaced Lumsdon for the 6th over, and Griff showing no respect planted him also into the cabbage field for 6 this time at cow corner. After hitting another boundary to long on, Griff chased a wide delivery and scooped it up in the air to captain Sayers at long off for a comfortable catch. He had made 31 out of 48 for 2. 9 runs were scored off Hill's 4th over, the 7th with Dazzler hitting the final delivery to backward square leg. In the 9th over, Dazzler cut Hill to the gully boundary, and 2 balls later there was a big appeal for lbw. Up went Bob Cowton's finger, and in what looked like a Colin Gates moment, Dazzler froze before uttering a few choice words. On making his way back to the pavilion, he threw his bat down in disgust, and the words "cheating b.....d" could clearly be heard. He made 13 and it was 64 for 3. Young Liam Love playing only his 2nd senior game had already been at the wicket 10 minutes stroking a few singles. In the 10th over bowled by young Josh Smith, he sent a sweet drive to the shed boundary at cow corner. Matty Sheader in only his 2nd Saturday innings then hit a 4 to square leg and followed up next ball with a 6 to backward square leg. That took the score to 80 for 3 and only 4 more was needed. It came in the next Smith over, the 12th, when after a wide to tie the scores, Matty cracked another shot to the mid wicket boundary. That was 87 for 3 and a 7 wicket win for our boys.
This was a comfortable win against one of the weaker teams in our league. The result was never in doubt once Griff had got his eye in building another useful opening partnership with Dallen, and continuing where he left off at Muston last week. Though we were missing some key players, we had enough batting strength in depth to win this match. That puts us top of the league, and we must now be favourites to win it. But don't get carried away lads after what happened in August last year when we didn't win a match. Keep charging on and working for each other! UTS!!
