Cayton 3rd XI v Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Seamer & Irton CC 2nd XI on Sat 29 Jul 2017 at 1.30pm
Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 10 wkts

Match report Captain Hax won the toss and asked 9 man Cayton to bat 1st on a windy overcast day. This looked to be a good decision when C Horton was caught by Dallen at point off the last ball of DJ’s 1st over. Runs were hard to come by on an unpredictable wicket, and DJ followed up with 3 consecutive maidens. Meanwhile, Beaver was bowling well at the bottom end and his 1st 5 overs conceded just 7 runs as the batsmen poked the odd single here and there. Archie replaced DJ at the top end and broke Cayton’s stubborn resistance with a wicket maiden. Keith Meatheringham, whose son plays for our under 13’s was undone by an under 13 combination. He hit a rising shot to mid wicket, where Matty Walters took a flying leap to his right and plucked the ball out of the air for a brilliant catch as cool as you like. That was 9 for 2 after 9 overs. You just sensed that it was going to be all over fairly quickly. Jake came on to bowl the 12th over from the bottom end, and claimed his 1st wicket with his 4th delivery, and another wonder catch. Robbie Hill hit a rising shot to Matty Sheader at point. Our man stretched low to his left and caught the ball with both hands as it was travelling quite fast. That was 14 for 3. In the next over, Cayton scored their 1st boundary when opener Matt Micklethwaite punished a loose Archie delivery hitting to mid wicket. The Cayton innings laboured to 22 in the 16th over and Jake struck twice for a double wicket maiden. With his 1st delivery he knocked back a couple of Kevin Pettitt’s stumps, and he repeated the process 3 balls later with Darren Hill the unfortunate victim. That was 5 down. Jake grabbed his 4th wicket 4 overs later when Callum Lumsden nicked a delivery into Hax’s safe hands at slip. That was 26 for 6, and it soon became 26 for 7 in the next over bowled by Matty Walters. Veteran Bob Cowton had arrived at the wicket, and Micklethwaite touched the ball round his legs and set off for a single. Cowton was late setting off, and Jake’s accurate throw from short fine leg to keeper Daz easily ran him out. It was 26 for 7, and with only 9 men, last man 74 year old Trevor Davies came to the middle. A veteran of many years standing, the left hander was determined to go down fighting, and hit a few deliveries in the air to mid off and mid on. One was spilled and he connected with a Jake delivery finding the boundary at square leg. That was 31 for 7. Next over, the 23rd, and young Matty claimed the last wicket when opener Micklethwaite on 14 hit his 4th delivery straight to Matty Sheader at cover. Cayton were effectively all out for 31 with Jake claiming 4 for 8 from 6 overs.
It was still overcast and windy after an early tea when Dazzler and Dallen went out to bat. From Robbie Hill’s 1st delivery, Dazzler creamed a glorious cover drive to the boundary. Darren Hill’s 1st over conceded 2 runs and a leg bye. His 2nd over, the 4th, conceded 9 runs with Dallen finding the square leg boundary off the last ball. Micklethwaite came on to bowl the 5th over and Daz creamed the 1st delivery through cover point for 4. That was 22 for 0 and 20 points was looking good. Meatheringham bowled the 6th over starting with 2 wides and a bye. Another wide and 2 singles took the score to a boundary hit away. After the batsmen had run 3 to level the scores, Dallen had the honour of the winning hit off Micklethwaite with a glorious drive to the extra cover boundary. Both batsmen finished on 15 not out, and 20 points was in the bag.
This was a resounding and expected win against the league’s bottom team, and we have now dismissed them twice for under 100 runs. On a difficult wicket, all our bowlers bowled well, with Jake the pick of the bunch. There were a couple of outstanding catches as well. Our openers made the job look easy knocking off the runs in 7 overs.
This win extends our lead at the top of the table to 18 points over Pickering, and we play them next Saturday at their place. Several key men will be missing apparently so it will be a tough task. Let’s hope the reserves can help us pull it off. UTS!!
