Match report Connor won the toss and elected to bat on a glorious sunny day with a strong breeze. He decided to juggle the batting order round a bit as we had already won the league, and sent in Beaver to face the 1st ball with young Liam Love accompanying him. It wasn’t long before both were back in the pavilion. Liam played a loose shot to a Josh Garbutt delivery and was bowled in the 2nd over. Beaver hit Alan Stadler’s 2nd ball to the square leg boundary in the 3rd over, but got a nick into keeper Mike Emmerson’s gloves 2 deliveries later. That was 6 for 2. Young Tommy was playing a straight bat to most deliveries, holding firm in tandem with the Hax. Stadler’s left arm chinamen were on the mark, and it was 9 for 2 after 7 overs. Then Hax sweetly timed a sweep to the long leg boundary off Garbutt in the 8th. Both batsmen were picking up the odd single or 2 as the bowling remained tight. George Moyes was introduced in the 12th over, and Tommy found the mid wicket boundary off the 4th delivery with a nice shot. The bowling continued tight, and Tommy trying not to get bogged down in the 15th over hit a drive in the air to deep mid on which was put down. Hax had scored 7 consecutive singles when he tried to turn a straight Moyes delivery to square leg, and saw his stumps broken. That was 33 for 3 after 16 overs. Moyes grabbed his 2nd wicket in the 18th over when Tommy edged one into Emmerson’s gloves, and 36 for 4. Connor came in and wasted no time playing a glorious extra cover drive for 4 off Stadler in the 19th over. However, Moyes struck again next over when young Callum Metcalf played inside a straight delivery and was bowled. It was 42 for 5, and with 10 men, it did not look promising for 100 runs. Connor found the long off boundary in the 21st over off Stadler again. He chanced his arm again at the start of the 24th over hitting a skier out to Marcos Garcia at long on for a well taken catch, and 55 for 6. Matty Walters took a big yahoo at the next delivery and his stumps were dis-arranged to give Moyes his 5th wicket. After stroking a 2 past the bowler at the start of the next over, Dallen played the same shot again and came back looking for the 2nd run. But Phil had not completed the 1st run and both were running to the same end. Dallen had to turn back, but the fielder’s throw hit the wicket before he reached the crease, and he was run out having scored the single. That was 58 for 8, and last man Dabbs came in. There was some stout defending as he tried to keep his end up. Opener Harry Gunning was brought back, and after bowling a no ball in the 29th over, Phil creamed him for 6 over long off from the 7th delivery. Then in the 33rd over, Phil drove the same bowler through cover for 4, and it was 77 for 8. Dabbs played a nice sweet square drive to the point boundary off new bowler Garcia in the 38th over. After 5 more singles had been scored, Jack Waud came on for the 41st over. Dabbs hit a shot to cover and set off for a single. Unfortunately, the throw to the batsmen’s end found the keeper and Phil was run out for 20 patient runs. With only 10 men, we were all out for 90 and the partnership had put on 32 runs. Moyes had finished with 5 for 20 from 12 overs.
Captain Garcia sent out ex Sewerby all rounder Harry Gunning and Mike Emmerson in the sun. Beaver conceded just 3 runs from his 1st 2 overs. Matty Walters was given a go, and Gunning despatched his 1st delivery to the long on boundary. In Matty’s 2nd over, the 4th, Emmerson plundered him to the long on boundary just right of the sight screen. Beaver’s 3rd over was a maiden, and his 4th conceded 3 wides and 2 byes. Matty was unfortunately taken to the cleaners in his 4th over, the 8th with Gunning powering hits to long off and square leg twice. Phil replaced Connor behind the sticks. Connor replaced Beaver for the 9th bowling chinamen out of the back of his hand, and Emmerson found the mid wicket boundary during this over. By the end, our visitors were over halfway there on 49 for 0. In the 11th over, Gunning smacked Connor for boundaries to wide long on and square leg. Young Tommy bowled the 10th and 12th overs without conceding a boundary. The next youngster to be given a go was Liam Love for the 13th over. A sweep to fine leg for 4 was followed up with a 2 to extra cover to give Gunning his 50. Then left hander Emmerson also found fine leg for 4 at the other side. With 8 runs needed for a mammoth win for them, young Callum Metcalf was brought on for the 14th over. He gave the ball some air and looked good for 3 dot balls. But Gunning smacked a boundary to backward square. After a bye, Emmerson hit the winning runs to the fine leg boundary and Flamborough had won by 10 wickets. Gunning finished with 55 and Emmerson 25. Only Beaver finished with credit conceding 7 runs from 4 overs.
This huge defeat was not the way we wanted to end a very successful season. With absentees through holidays, functions, and 1st team call ups, we had a weakened team and a man short, and it told in the end. Connor was presented with the championship trophy by Simon Dobson before the tea interval, and I ended up with a cheque for £150. This is what we play for, and we all look forward to a new challenge next season in the higher division. Enjoy your winter break everyone. UTS!!
