Match report On an overcast evening with a glimmer of sun beyond Pickering, stand in captain Shish won the toss and elected to bat. He went out with Connor to face the 1st over of off spin bowled by Pete Webster. It wasn’t long before Connor was lofting an uppish drive through extra cover for 4. Unfortunately, he thought he could do the same again, and the next delivery found the stumps, for 5 for 1. Our South African all rounder Gert came in and wasted no time in hitting Steve Hardie to the extra cover boundary next over, which finished on 16 for 1. In the 3rd over, Gert slogged Webster to the cow corner boundary, and Shish followed up with an off drive to the boundary. With other runs, the over ended on 27 for 1. Both batsmen continued to dominate in the 4th over with Shish hitting further boundaries to extra cover and long on.. Gert then hit Webster for 6 which bounced on the B1258 and landed in the farmhouse garden over the road. It took a couple of minutes to retrieve. At the end of the over, it was 48 for 1. Gert was in aggressive mood and next over drove Hardie twice past the sightscreen into the children’s playground, and the score moved on to 62 for 1. T Holmes bowled the 7th over and Gert drove him to long on then pulled him to mid wicket for boundaries before launching another big one for 6 into the mid wicket metal fence. That was 77 for 1, and looking good for a big score. Steve’s brother Geoff bowled the 8th over and Gert despatched him to cow corner for his 50 which had taken him only 29 minutes. A few balls later and Shish was walking back to the pavilion after his stumps had been re-arranged, with the score on 83 for 2. Phil came in and drove his 1st ball through the covers for 4. Holmes’s next over was more sedate with only 3 singles and a leg bye coming from it. In the 10th over, 4 singles were taken plus a power drive to the long on boundary by our latest import. Further boundaries in each of the last 2 overs plus a load of singles and a couple of 2’s took the final score to 120 for 2. Gert was unbeaten on 78 with Phil on 10.
Joe Tyson and Holmes went out for Ebberston needing 10 runs per over to make a game of it. Beaver opened proceedings for us, and conceded just 2 singles and a bye off the 1st over. Tyson dominated from the off in Hax’s 1st over hitting boundaries to cow corner and mid wicket. It finished 16 for 0. Off the 1st ball of Beaver’s 2nd over, Holmes stroked the ball into the covers where Gert picked it up and hit the stumps with a direct shy to run out the batsman running to the bowler’s end. In came Eddie Swiers, but he was a spectator as his partner Tyson bludgeoned Beaver twice to the boundary backward of mid wicket, followed up with a drive to long on for 4. He continued his assult on our bowlers next over with a hook to fine leg and a pull to cow corner for boundaries off the Hax. Swiers also got in on the act with a 4 to long off, taking the score to 47 for 1. Jake came on for the 5th over, but Tyson treated him with disdain hammering boundaries twice to long on, once to mid wicket, and finished off with a 6 into the wire fence again at mid wicket to bring up his 50.. The 6th over was bowled by Rob, and following a wide, Swiers top edged a legside pull and the ball spooned up in the air where our Jakey was running round at leg gully to take a good catch. Swiers had scored 5 runs in the 50 partnership, and it was 66 for 2. Pete Webster came in and a few singles were added taking the score to 69 at the end of the over. Jakey got some more stick in the 7th over when Tyson hit 4 more boundaries to 3rd man, extra cover, backward square leg and a top edge again to 3rd man. That was 85 for 2, and they were above the required run rate. In the 8th over, 5 runs were scored off the bat plus 5 byes leaving Ebberston on 95 for 2. It was looking ominous for us. Connor was asked to bowl the 9th over, and Tyson glanced him to fine leg for 4 plus a pull round to the long leg boundary. With further singles, the score had quickly moved on to 107 for 2 and there was still 3 overs left. Archie came on to bowl the 10th over and started brightly conceding 1 run off the 1st 3 balls. But Tyson then took command once again with 3 more boundaries leaving the scores tied at the end of the over. Connor started the 11th with 2 dot balls before cleaning up Webster. Jonny Metcalfe came in and promptly steered the next ball through the vacant gully area for the winning single, and a 7 wicket margin. Tyson had carried his bat for 97 runs giving very few chances along the way. Rob was our most economical bowler with 1 for 9 from 2 overs.
Ebberston it seems had fielded a much stronger team tonight following their mauling by Valley A last Thursday. There was just no stopping Mr Tyson, and the farmer was the basic difference between us winning and losing. So it’s back to the drawing board, and a tough match at home to Valley A next week. Can we do better than Ebberston did? Only time will tell.
