Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 5 wkts

Match report The visitors won the toss and decided to bat on this glorious very warm evening. Jimmy bowled the 1st over and Sean Pinder cut his 3rd ball through the gully for 4. Beaver bowled the 2nd over at the village end, and Gary Gibson launched his 2nd ball straight to Archie standing at deep mid on for the catch. 2 balls later, Eric Hall paddled the ball round to the deep backward square boundary, and the score was 13 for 1 at the end of the over. The 1st ball of the 3rd over went sweetly for 6 off Hall's bat to the pavilion edge over the long on boundary. However, he got a nick into keeper Bakes's gloves next ball and was gone for 13, with 19 runs on the board. Beaver conceded 14 runs off his 2nd over with Alex Glass stroking him through the covers for 4 and clipping him to the wide mid wicket boundary. That was 34 for 2. Jimmy bowled a good over next conceding a wide and 2 singles. Young Archie bowled the 6th over with 5 singles coming from the 1st 6 balls, and Pinder driving the 7th ball through the covers for 4. Jimmy then conceded 9 runs off his final over with Glass hitting him to the mid wicket boundary, and glancing him to long leg for 4. That was 57 for 1. 5 more singles were taken from Archie's next over, the 8th. Acting captain Connor brought himself on for the 9th conceding a massive 23 runs, including 4 wides with 6's hit by both batsmen to mid wicket and square leg. That took it to 85 for 1. Archie went for 3 more singles and a boundary hit by Glass through cover. A big partnership between Pinder and Glass was building quickly, and during the 11th over bowled by our Jakey, boundaries were hit to mid wicket and square leg by Glass. Archie's 4th over went for 9 including more singles and a pull by Glass down to backward square leg for 4. Beaver was brought back for the 13th and after Glass had hit another backward square leg boundary, he played all round the next ball and was comprehensively bowled one short of his 50. That was 118 for 3 and the partnership had put on 99 runs. In Jakey's next over, Pinder cut the 1st ball to the 3rd man boundary to bring up his 50, then Chris Reddish spooned one up in the air and Jakey running round to short mid wicket safely pouched the catch. That was 126 for 4. Beaver bowled the last over, the 15th and Pinder top edged the 1st ball into the air where keeper Bakes moving to the right safely took the catch. He made 54. A further 10 runs were made without a boundary to leave Valley on 137 for 5 at the close. Beaver finished with 3 for 38 from his 4 overs.
Connor and Bakes wasted no time in responding to the chase, with 18 runs coming from Jonny White's 1st over. This included 2 boundaries by Bakes and 1 to cover by Connor. Connor then took 10 runs off Timmy Beck's 1st over, but holed out at deep extra cover off the last ball for 17. That was 28 for 1. Just 1 boundary was scored in the 3rd with Bakes cutting one to point. In the 4th over, Beck bowled 3 wides off the 1st 2 balls before Phil nicked the next delivery through their keeper for 4. Bakes then creamed one through extra cover, and 45 for 1. In the 5th over, Bakes was in rampant mood, steering one to the gully boundary, and following up with a mighty 6 near to the shed and another 4 creamed through cover. That was 62 for 1 and even better to come in the 6th over. Beck conceded 4 more wides in 2 deliveries before Bakes went mental hitting 5 boundaries in 6 balls to all parts of the ground. The 5th took him to his 50, and the score to 86 for 1. Phil was playing the passive role stroking the singles, and 4 more were added off the 7th over bowled by Glass. Hall came on for the 8th and Phil stroked him for 2 boundaries through the covers. It was 101 for 1, and another big partnership was building. Unfortunately, it all turned sour in Glass's 2nd over, the 9th. Firstly, Bakes hoisted one to deep extra cover for a fine catch and 101 for 2. He had made 55. New man Matty Sheader came in and 3 balls later top edged a delivery into the leg gully area for a simple catch. Then young Tommy Greenwood went in and was cleaned up 1st ball, and 102 for 4. Young Liam Love playing his 1st senior game then steered a 2 round his legs and we were 104 for 4. With 6 overs to go we needed 34 runs and Phil was still there standing firm. The 10th over brought us another 9 runs with Liam keeping the board ticking over and Phil cutting one through gully for 4. With 4 singles and a 2 added in the 11th over, it was 119 for 4. In the 12th over, Phil nicely creamed a 6 over long on by the pavilion door, followed by a 2 to take the score to 129. However, young Liam couldn't get Glass away in the next over playing out a maiden. With 2 overs left, we wanted another 9 runs. Phil stroked a couple of 2's off Hall, then unfortunately holed out to Beck at mid off for a masterful 40. Hall then bowled a wide and Jimmy nudged a single, to leave us 3 from victory with an over to go. James Allison came on to bowl, and Jimmy cracked the 1st delivery through the covers for 4 to win the game for us by 5 wickets. Liam finished 8 not out and Glass their best bowler with 3 for 13 from his 4 overs.
Although Valley A only had 10 men, this was a cracking win which will give our morale a boost for the games to come. It was set up by our 1st 2 partnerships. Connor and Bakes with 28 from the 1st 2 overs followed by 73 in just over 6 overs by Bakes and Phil. It set the platform for the win making the job easier for the later men to come. Lets hope we can carry on next week where we left off today and with more good weather to enjoy. UTS!
