Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Seamer & Irton CC 1st XI v Ebberston on Sun 04 Jun 2017 at 1.30pm
Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 3 wkts

Match report Ebberston won the toss and elected to bat on a dry firm wicket. Openers Jon Mason and Doug Bentley started cautiously with 10 runs on the board after 7 overs, and 20 runs after 10 overs. They made steady progression to 42 after 15 overs. Jimmy replaced Captain Kebab at the pavilion end, and with his 1st ball trapped Bentley in front for 9. Mason and Alex Machin took the score on to 56 after a further 2 overs. In the 18th over, Jimmy grabbed his 2nd wicket, a maiden when he also trapped Machin in front. Our bowlers then put the brakes on their batting with 11 runs coming off 5 overs. Matty Turnbull had scored 4 of them when he was then trapped lbw by Shish, with his foot well forward. Eddie Craggs wasted no time in getting runs cracking 5 fours and a 6 in a partnership with Mason worth 40 runs. He was out in the 29th over when he too fell lbw to Shish for 31, and the score on 107 for 4. In Shish’s next over, Ady Turnbull planted him for 6 into the ploughed field at mid wicket after one bounce on the path. By the 36th over, the score had reached 134 when Ady was cleaned up by Jimmy. Mason who had been gathering runs quickly was out in the next over for 66 when he was pegged by Shish. That was 138 for 6, and it became 138 for 7 when Scott Woodhead drove a catch to Corey in the covers. 2 runs and 2 overs later, Joe Tyson was pegged by another Shish “chinaman”. Tom Holmes became Shish’s 6th victim when he feathered a tickle into keeper Chaddy’s gloves, and 152 for 9. Ebberston were all out for 159 in the 43rd over when Frankie Beal gave Corey his 2nd catch at cover, this time off Gert’s bowling.
After tea, the sky was dull and the wind got up when Shish was sent out to the middle with Jenx. They too started cautiously and were 11 in the 7th over. Shish had got 8 of these when he succumbed to a Beal delivery finding Woodhead at mid off for a comfortable catch. Davy G and Jenx then put together a partnership worth 40 runs in 8 overs. The score had reached 51 when Jenx trying to hit Holmes on the leg side spun round on the back foot and was given out lbw by umpire Dodds for 25. Chaddy joined Dave and the pair built slowly mainly in singles with a partnership of 30 which ended in the 26th over. Dave had scored 34 when he top edged Ady Turnbull to Swiers in the gully, and it was 81 for 3. Darroll found the boundary 3 times and Chaddy twice in the next partnership which was worth 50 runs. It ended in the 37th over when Beal knocked back Darroll’s stumps for 21. Next over, Chaddy was gone for 42 when he was adjudged to have stepped in front, and the score 135 for 5. With 7 overs remaining to get 25 runs and 5 wickets to fall, it seemed a formality. But Bakes and Corey were made to work hard for runs with some tight bowling which resulted mainly in a few singles per over, though Corey did find the long leg boundary in the 40th over. Matty Turnbull was brought back for the 42nd over and immediately got rid of Corey who lofted a catch to sub fielder Hardie at mid off, and 149 for 6. 11 runs were needed with 3 overs left. Unfortunately more tight bowling restricted Bakes and Josh B to 1 run in each of the 43rd and 44th overs, and Josh tickled one to keeper Bentley without scoring. That left 9 needed off the last over bowled by Swiers. It went 2 and 1 to Bakes, 1 Kebab, and 1 Bakes leaving the skipper on strike with 2 balls to go. He promptly hit a 6 into the hedge at mid wicket to win the game, to the whoops of joy from the pavilion. On returning to the pavilion, he gave a short fist pump and a “yeeessss!!”
This was a fabulous win by our boys to make up for the defeat at Staithes the previous evening. Shish starred with the ball taking 6 for 56 from 12 overs, and backed up by Jimmy with 3 for 33 from his 12. Fielding was excellent once again. Chaddy was again the batting star with 42 ably backed up by Dave with 34, and there were useful contributions from Jenx and Darroll. The skipper held his nerve at the end to see us home. A good all round performance, with more to come at home next week I’m sure. UTS!!
