Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Lost by 3 wkts

Match report Seamer won the toss and elected to bat on a dry firm wicket, with a dull sky and little wind. Openers Jenx and Shish started cautiously against tight and accurate bowling by Matty Turnbull and Frankie Beal. Jenx hit Turnbull for 4 to square leg in the 3rd over. Shish fell to Turnbull without scoring in the 5th over when he edged a delivery into Alex Machen’s gloves with the score on 8. Chaddy came in and after facing 3 deliveries was bowled leg and middle stepping across an inswinging Turnbull delivery. In the 9th over, Jenx found the long leg boundary off Turnbull, and Corey hit Beal backward of square for 4 in the 10th over. Jenx then drove Turnbull for 4 to long on in the 11th over. The 12th over bowled by Beal was a wicket maiden with Corey also edging into Machen’s gloves, and the score was 23 for 3. The score was progressing at 2 runs per over, and it wasn’t until the 18th over that Bakes found the long on boundary. Jenx hit his 4th boundary in the 21st over when he found square leg again off Turnbull. Unfortunately in the next over, he became Machen’s 3rd victim off Beal’s bowling. He had made 27 and it was 45 for 4. Davy G played a nice square drive to point for 4 off Beal in the 24th over, but was adjudged leg before next ball, and it was 51 for 5 after 24 overs. Eddie Swiers and leg spinner Jordan Welford were introduced into their attack. Bakes paddled Swiers down to the fine leg boundary in the 27th over. He then powered Swiers over cow corner for 6 in the 29th over. But Swiers hit back at the end of the over shattering Jimmy’s stumps, and it was 73 for 6. Next over, Bakes powered Welford for 6 into the netting at square leg, followed next ball with a 4 to mid wicket. Bakes and Kebab then kept the scoreboard moving with singles mainly off Welford for the next 5 overs or so. The 35th over bowled by Swiers was a double wicket maiden. Kebab powered a skier out to Matty Turnbull at long on for a comfortable catch, then Bakes found his stumps dis-arranged going for another big one. He had made 37 and it was 94 for 8. In the next over after the ball went for 4 byes, Gaz Walts top edged a high delivery for 2 which wasn’t signalled by the umpire. Next ball, he sent a dolly catch back to bowler Welford, and it was 101 for 9. Unfortunately, DJ couldn’t bat with a poorly hand so we were all out for 101. Beal and Swiers both finished with 3 wickets apiece and Turnbull 2 wickets.
The sky was overcast and the wind had got stronger when openers Jon Mason and Alex Machen went out to bat after tea. Mason started with a 4 to backward point off Jimmy in the 2nd over and Machen hit Gert to long on for 4 in the 3rd. Next over, Jimmy trapped Machen lbw with his 1st delivery and it was 14 for 1. Jimmy’s next over, the 6th was a wicket maiden when he pegged Mason’s stumps, and 22 for 2. Gert then followed with a wicket maiden, as Ben Lockey hit straight to Chaddy at short extra cover, and no addition to the score. That brought left handers Damien Readman and Matty Turnbull together. In the 10th over, Jimmy went for 11 runs with Turnbull hooking round to long leg for 6 off the 2nd delivery. Readman nicked Gert down to the 3rd man boundary in the 11th over, and powered Jimmy to long on in the 12th. That was 52 for 3 and a strong partnership was building. Turnbull continued this powering Gert to long off for another boundary in the 13th over. Shish replaced Jimmy at the road end and Turnbull smacked his 1st delivery to backward square leg for 4. DJ was brought on for the 15th over, and Turnbull went mental finding the bowling much to his liking. He powered boundaries to extra cover and wide mid wicket and 6’s to mid wicket and long on. With 22 runs off it, the score had moved on to 81 for 3, and victory for them was just around the corner, or so it seemed. In the next over, Turnbull went for another big yahoo, but Shish’s cunning knocked back his stumps and he was out for 42 with the score on 83 for 4. Corey replaced DJ for the 17th over, and Swiers stroked him through extra cover for 4. Shish came back bowling a wicket maiden in the 18th after hitting Readman’s stumps. He had scored 17 and it was 89 for 5. In the 20th over, Swiers went charging down the track to connect with Shish, but missed the ball and was stumped by keeper Bakes. That was 92 for 6, and Ebberston were looking jittery. Corey then pegged Tom Holmes in the next over and they were 98 for 7. After Shish had bowled another maiden, Welford and Beal steered them over the line with 2 singles and a 2 off Corey, and a 3 wicket win for them. Shish had finished with 3 wickets for 13 from 5 overs and Jimmy had 2 for 23 from 6 overs.
In a game played in good spirit, Ebberston had crawled over the line after a late batting collapse. Readman and Turnbull had turned the match around with a 61 run partnership after 3 early wickets had fallen. Earlier, Jenx and Bakes had given us hope with paper scores as we struggled against tight bowling. Not the best way to end the season, but we can be satisfied with our final 6th position placing in the premier league. Well done Kebab for marshalling us into a tight unit and top half finish. We can look forward to next season with hope, anticipation and expectation. UTS!!
