Fylingdales v Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Seamer & Irton CC 2nd XI on Sat 09 Jun 2018 at 1.30pm
Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Lost by 115 runs

Match report The home team chose to bat on an unpredictable track this fine sunny day. It appeared to be a bad decision for them when Steve Husband was pegged by DJ off the 4th ball of the match. Then the other opener Chris Hurworth was nicely caught at cover by Dallen in Beaver's 2nd over, the ball flying sharply to him which he palmed in the air and caught at the 2nd attempt. That was 6 for 2. Chris Shrimpton had barely settled in when he edged Beaver into the slips. Tuna rose like a fish out of the water to snaffle the catch with both hands above his head, and they were 18 for 3 in the 8th over. This was splendid cricket! Another 2 Beaver overs later and it was 36 for 4 when Tom Shrimpton was well pegged by our wily veteran bowler. His figures at that point were 3 for 11 off 6 overs. Most of the next runs were scored by Captain Mark Estill, but the introduction of Sam Collo changed that. Estill and Harry Purves had provided a 7 over stay but that ended when Purves misjudged another legger and was bowled. That was 58 for 5 in the 19th over. Archie had joined the attack, and the twin legger combination kept the runs to a minimum. The score had moved on to 81 in the 28th over when Estill lost his patience trying to have a go and Archie bowled him for 33. After his next over, the 30th, Archie's figures were 6 overs 1 for 15. But things were about to change 2 balls into his 7th over when one of the umpires queried how many overs he had bowled. It must have unsettled him and some loose deliveries ensued with another 17 runs coming from the over. Guy Shrimpton, a late replacement for their no show player, and Jamie Agar then proceeded to take control punishing our bowlers and upping the anti. Collo finished his spell taking 1 for 34 from his 12. He was replaced in the 39th over by Mr Hax who was having his 1st bowl of the season.......and it showed. 14 runs were conceded off the over, including 8 wides, and the score had moved on to 144 for 6. Back came Beaver to bowl his 10th over, and after bowling a number of wides, finally broke the partnership which had almost doubled the score. He cleaned up Agar who had batted nearly 80 minutes for his 25 runs, and it was157 for 7. Shrimpton and Jim Mayne continued to attack up to the last over taking the score to 190. From the penultimate ball, Beaver claimed his 5th wicket splitting Shrimpton's stumps for 43. Gary Smith came in to face the last ball, and promptly turned it round his legs for 4. The final score was 194 for 8, which included 48 extras, a much healthier look than was perceived after 20 overs, and a huge turnaround. Beaver finished with 5 for 40 from his spell.
If Seamer were going to make inroads into this large score, they would need a solid start from the openers Dazzler and Josh. 3 boundaries were scored in the first 4 overs, and the pair had put on 23 in the 7th over when Josh was pegged by Purves for 13. That turned out to be the best partnership of the innings as the rot eventually set in, due to fine pace and movement by the home bowlers. Dazzler was gone for 9 in the next over when he got an edge into keeper Agar's gloves off a Tom Shrimpton seamer and it was 23 for 2. Phil made a brief assault on the bowling cracking 2 boundaries before also nicking one to the keeper, this time off Purves for 11. Chris Shrimpton, slightly more pacier than his brother who he replaced started off with 2 wicket maidens. His victims were Hax and Tuna, both cleaned up by pace and movement. In between this, Purves got the all important wicket of Collo who had stuck it out for 30 minutes for 9. He too was comprehensively bowled. Suddenly, it was 50 for 6. Dallen was next to go in the 20th over when, after hitting a boundary was similarly pegged by Shrimpton. That was 63 for 7. Archie was his usual solid in defence, and even cracked a glorious cover drive of a full Shrimpton delivery. But he was eventually beaten after a 27 minute stay by another Purves seamer, and 71 for 8. There was little resistance left now. DJ after claiming 2 extra runs for an overthrow had his stumps disturbed by another Shrimpton cutter. The end came when young Matty was felled by a short pitched Mayne lifter causing the youngster to disturb the bails with his foot. Thankfully, he was able to walk off the field unaided though slightly shaken. We were 79 all out with Purves and Chris Shrimpton sharing 8 wickets between them.
Well what a disaster this turned out to be after such a bright opening. It was looking good after the first 30 overs or so, and we could well have imagined bowling them all out for a little over a hundred. After the Archie over query, one or two tempers began to show, the bowling became erratic and the fielding not so good. Their late order batsmen capitalised on this, and set us a challenging score which in the end, we could not compete. It was another horror show on the extras front as well. Their bowlers bowled consistent line and length with movement and frequently troubled all our batsmen, none of whom really got going. Beaver can take credit from this game with his 5 wickets, though DJ and Collo went for just under 3 an over from their spells. It leaves a lot to ponder over for our next away trip to Cayton. UTS!!
