Wykeham 2nd XI v Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Seamer & Irton CC 2nd XI on Sat 04 Aug 2018 at 1.30pm
Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 8 wkts

Match report Wykeham won the toss and chose to bat on this gorgeous hot sunny day. Openers Pete Shepherdson and George Shannon could not get going against the accurate bowling of DJ and Beaver. 3 of the 1st 4 overs were maidens and only 2 runs on the board. Shannon was then cleaned up by a full toss off DJ's next delivery. Shepherdson got off the mark with a single in the 9th over, and the bowling remained tight. After 11 overs, 7 of which were maidens, the scoreboard showed 7 runs. The 12th over by Beaver was a wicket maiden, with the ball looping up off Ian Thompson's bat towards the gully area where Dabber moving left stooped low to take a one handed catch inches from the ground. That was 7 for 2. The scoreboard started to tick over 2 overs later as Tom Poor quickly settled in with Shepherdson to lead the Wykeham recovery. Shepherdson hit the 1st boundary in the 15th over and DJ was rested after it with figures of 8-5-8-1, and the score on 19. The scoring rate increased as Poor steered the singles and 2's whilst Shepherdson started to find the boundaries. Beaver bowled his 12 overs straight through finishing with 1 for 24, and Archie at the other end conceding 17 off 4 overs. The score had reached 52 for 1 at this point. Collo was introduced for the 26th over but could not find the breakthrough as the batsmen continued to dominate. Griff was given a go for the 29th over, but Poor drove him to the boundary 4 times, and the score moved on to 84 for 1. Griff then went for 9 in his next over, with Poor driving through point to bring up his 50 in 74 minutes. Meanwhile Collo at the other end was bowling maidens. Griff then bowled a maiden and the score stuck on 94 for 4 overs. The 100 was reached in the 36th over bowled by Collo, and a 4 by Shepherdson brought up the 100 partnership. DJ was brought back for the 39th over but 11 runs were conceded in singles, 2's and a 3. Poor then hit Collo for 6 at the start of the 40th over, and the score was 136 at the end of it. Poor hit Collo for another 6 over mid wicket in the 42nd over. Finally the breakthrough came at the start of the 43rd over. DJ forced Shepherdson into a slog to deep mid off where Collo was waiting to pouch the catch. He had batted just over 42 overs for 38 runs, and the score was 146 for 3. The partnership was worth 139. Poor took the score to 165 helped with 10 byes in the remaining 3 overs. He finished unbeaten on 94. DJ and Beaver were the best bowlers each conceding just 2 runs per over from their full allocation.
Openers Dazzler and Dallen got off to a similar start to Wykeham finding the accurate bowling hard to get away as they settled in. Between them, Basher Wilson and Steve Day bowled 6 maidens out of the 1st 7 overs, with 5 leg byes in the total of 7. Then Daz drove Day for 2 cover boundaries to get the scoreboard moving. He followed up with another 6 runs in Day's next over, the 10th, and it was 27 for 0. Captain Thompson brought himself on for the 12th, and Daz cut the ball into Shepherdson's hand diving low at slip for 14. That was 31 for 1. Enter Sam Collo. Wilson was taken off after 6 overs bowling 4 maidens 1 for 5. Steering the singles and 2's with the odd boundary, Collo and Dallen dug in to up the scoring tempo. Dallen scored 10 off Thompson's 3rd over, the 16th, and we were 56 for 1. The chase was on. In the 19th over, Collo hit Shannon for 6 into the field at mid wicket. Then Dallen powered 2 4's and a 3 in the next over by Dan Bateson. He had found his form and was looking to score quickly at every opportunity. It was 79 for 1. The momentum continued and the 100 was brought up in the 25th over. 3 overs later, Dallen steered a couple of 2's to bring up his 50, then left the field to applause from his team mates. He had batted exactly 100 minutes and the partnership had put on 94 runs, with the score on 125. Griff came in, and chipped the 1st delivery straight to Day at mid wicket for a duck. Phil came to the middle content to play himself in with singles and supporting Collo who was in the groove once more. In Wilson's 9th over, the 33rd, Collo smashed another 6 over mid wicket this time bringing him his 50. It had taken him 85 minutes. He followed up with 2 more boundaries in the same over. 2 overs later, the 35th, he belted another 4 this time off Shepherdson to win the match for us by 8 wickets. He finished unbeaten on 62 with his landlord Phil also unbeaten on 15.
This was an excellent win dominated by our batsmen who rose to the challenge with guts and determination. Collo and Dallen led the way with half centuries. Our bowlers found it difficult to get wickets against equally gritty batting, though DJ and Beaver's economy rate was very good, and restricted their scoring. Having 10 men though didn't help their cause. This win anchor's us nicely in mid table, and realistically we would have to lose all our remaining 4 matches to go down. Let's see what we can get out of them. UTS!!
