Match report The hosts won the toss and put us Seamer lads in to bat on a beautiful track with the sun shining and a cool breeze. Paceman David Snowball's 1st delivery was neatly stroked away to the cover point boundary by big Dave. Unfortunately the 4th delivery beat our Dave for pace and movement and he was cleaned all ends up for the 4 runs on the board. Aussie Sam then got a nick on the next delivery and their keeper Sam Ingle took a flying leap to hold on to the catch for a golden. Two wickets in the 1st over and not looking good. Young Tommy got us going with an offside cut through gully for 2 then a sweep to fine leg for 3, both off left armer and Ryan Sidebottom lookalike Andy Exton. His next over, the 4th and off the 1st ball, Mayfield Rob was tempted into an uppish cover drive which was snapped up by Brad Milburn. He made 3 singles and the score was 15 for 3. The batsmen had crossed and Tommy played out the next 6 deliveries before pinching the strike off the last delivery. Tommy neatly stroked a 2 off Snowball in the 5th over and again played out the over nicking a single off the last delivery. The 6th over was bowled by Exton and Tommy and Phil compiled 8 runs to move the score on to 27 for 3. In the 7th over, Snowball's 4th, Tommy steered a 3 towards the long Popular Bank boundary, before Phil dropped on the ball and called for a quick single. A fielder shied at the stumps and the ball sailed towards the opposite boundary near the Tea Room for 3 overthrows. That was Snowball's spell finishing with 2 for 19. Exton's 4th over yielded another 3 for Tommy before he was given out leg before for a gallant 21 in 31 minutes, and 39 for 4. Exton finished with 2 for 21 from his spell. 13 year old spinner Harry Edwards came on to bowl the 9th over, and with his 2nd delivery pegged Anosh's stumps, and 40 for 5. Temporary captain Daz came in and immediately struck a 4. However, following a wide, he too was walking having nicked the next delivery into keeper Ingle's gloves, and 45 for 6. That brought in Archie, to forge another partnership with Phil. Former Muston and Nomads player Babu Mathew came on to bowl the 10th over and our pair took 10 runs from him with Phil finding the boundary at cover, and a couple of 2's. Off the next over by Edwards, the pair took 9 runs including another cover boundary for Phil. Archie had scored 4 singles in the 12th over when he mis-timed a drive off Mathew into the willing hands of Milburn, still at extra cover. That was 66 for 7 after a 21 run partnership. 6 runs and a leg bye were taken in the 13th over off Edwards. 5 singles were taken from 6 deliveries by Mathew in the 14th over. The next delivery was despatched to the long leg boundary by DJ, before his pegs were shattered off the last delivery, and 82 for 8. Harry's brother Josh came on to bowl the last over, and helped by 3 wides, Phil and Jimmy plundered 16 runs, including a sweet extra cover drive for 4 by Phil. Our innings ended on 98 for 8 with Phil unbeaten on 43.
DJ opened from the Trafalgar Square end, and Sam Drury drove his 3rd delivery to the long off boundary. However, Drury got a tickle off the 6th delivery into keeper Daz's gloves and it was 5 for 1. Martin Cook joined Kieron Fenwick in the middle and the pair started to show their class. Beaver bowled the 2nd over and 11 runs were taken from it. This included a straight drive to the North Stand by Fenwick for 4. DJ bowled a tidy 3rd over with just 3 runs coming from it. The batsmen however got at Beaver again with 16 runs being taken, including 2 consecutive strikes to the wide mid wicket boundary under the West stand by Cook. They were also taking singles at will. Jimmy replaced Beaver for the 6th over and 9 runs were scored, including a hook by Cook again to mid wicket. Archie came on for the 7th over, and the batsmen took 4 singles, a 3, a leg bye and a wide from it. The score advancing to 56 for 1. Jimmy's next over, the 8th yielded 8 more runs, with Fenwick striking to the long on boundary. The batsmen got at Archie in the 9th over with 14 runs coming from it, Cook peppering the boundaries at square leg, mid wicket, and long leg. The batsmen then took 13 runs off Jimmy's next over, the 10th. This included a 6 to long on and a wide mid wicket boundary, both by Fenwick. That took the score to 90 for 1. After Archie's next over, the 11th, the scores were level. It was left to Fenwick to score the winning run with another boundary off the next delivery by Jimmy. He finished unbeaten on 48 with Cook unbeaten on 44, and a partnership worth 97 runs.
We were well beaten by 9 wickets with virtually 4 overs to spare. It was not all doom and gloom however, as there were a few notable performances. Phil led the way again with a solid 43 runs not out, and a gutsy innings of 21 by young Tommy who is showing promise on a night, and not frightened of the fast bowlers bearing down on him. Pick of the bowlers was DJ with a tidy spell of 1 for 11 from 3 overs. As we found out 2 seasons ago, it is not going to be easy in this division, but if we can play with fortitude and a bit of passion, and field 11 men every week, then there's no reason why we can't hold our own and finish above the relegation places. UTS!!
