Match report Weather conditions were cloudy and breezy when the visitors won the toss and put us in to bat. It was a slow start for our boys as the pace of former Scarborough and Mulgrave seamer Michael Thompson began to tell. Archie promoted to opener in place of his dad didn't last long and nicked a Thompson delivery into their keeper's gloves in the 3rd over. That wicket fell with 10 on the board, and from thereon, it was a procession of failures back to the pavilion. Six more of our batsmen all failed to get out of the starting blocks and all fell to Thompson, by the end of the 21st over. Chaddy nudged one to Neil Fletcher at slip in the 7th over, and Liam saw his off stick uprooted in the 12th over. That was 30 for 3. Tiff got a bank holiday pair when the ball stuck in the outstretched right palm of Fletcher for his 2nd catch at slip. That was 34 for 4 in the 15th over. Josh B couldn't continue where he left off on Saturday and after finding the long leg boundary, saw his stumps shattered after going for a big drive in the 19th over. Next ball, Babb looped a dolly catch straight to Ross Triffitt at point and it was 42 for 6. Gaz Lawton didn't last long either and was adjudged leg before in the 21st over and 44 for 7. Whilst all this was going on, opener Jenx had been watching at the other end, and playing the lead anchor role and punishing the bad balls. He stroked 3 boundaries before getting stuck on 21 for several overs. Both opening bowlers each bowled out their allotted 12 overs, and were replaced by former Scarborough players Tom Pateman and Fletcher. And it wasn't long before more wickets fell. Fletcher's 1st over was a double wicket maiden. DJ who had started confidently holed out to Tom Bruce at mid wicket, then Jimmy was cleaned up next ball, and it was 52 for 9. Gaz Walts and Jenx then dug in to make the score more respectable, and added 27 runs together. This included 14 from Pateman's 3rd over, the 29th. Jenx was trying to force the issue and in the 34th over top edged a Fletcher delivery over the slips where James Allison at short third man took a low stooping catch. It was 79 all out and Jenx had made 44 of these. Thompson finished with 7 for 17 and Fletcher 3 for 7.
Brompton's openers Robin Siddle and Tom Bruce started more slowly, digging in while they got their eye in. Gaz Lawton and Babb bowled tidy with 10 runs coming from the first 5 overs. Then the boundaries started to come and the score quadrupled in the next 5 overs. Jimmy replaced Babb at the village end and 10 runs were taken from his first over. Their batsmen were confidently scoring runs and the 50 partnership was brought up in the 13th over. The breakthrough came in the 16th over, unfortunately too late to save the match. It was Jimmy who forced the umpire into an lbw decision against Siddle. He had made 24 and it was 62 for 1. Tom Pateman came in determined to finish the job quickly as it was raining lightly. He scored 2 and 4 off the first 2 balls faced, and followed up in Jimmy's next over with a 4 and a 6 to finish the match. It was a 9 wicket win for them with Bruce unbeaten on 36 and Pateman on 17. Jenx was the only one to emerge with any credit from this match, though Gaz Lawton was our best bowler with 0-20 from 7 overs.
So it's back to the drawing board and still looking for our first win of the season. Where do we go from here? Well, we have a new squad member to come in, and 2 hopefully back from holiday and injury to strengthen the squad for our next match against a much improved Nawton Grange side. Determined application should do it I reckon. UTS!!
