Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 89 runs

Match report Snainton won the toss and put us in to bat on a sunny day but with dark clouds looking towards Ayton and Snainton. Captain for the day Tiff was the mainstay of our innings. Having been dropped at slip on 1 run in the 4th over, he went on to punish Snainton chancing his arm to hit 10 boundaries in his innings of 61, and was 5th out with the score on 79 in the 24th over. His mis-timed shot looped in the air for a dolly catch into the keeper's gloves. Prior to this, Hax was the 1st to go hitting the ball up in the air to cover for a straight forward catch making 8 of the 20 runs on the board. Tiff and Boo took the score on to 41 before Boo turned a mis-timed paddle to backward square leg for a simple catch. Young Tommy then saw his middle stump cartwheel over next ball for a golden. Sheads was 4th out with the score on 60 sending a catch into the gully area. Young Callum stuck around for over half an hour for his 1 run before being bowled with the score on 94. Tuna and Beaver then put together a useful partnership of 37 runs scoring at over a run a minute with a succession of boundaries. Beaver scored 18 nicking one into the keeper's gloves in the 35th over. That was 131 for 7. Doc was comprehensively bowled a few overs later for a duck, and Tuna was stuck on 33 for a few overs before also being cleaned up. That was 137 for 9. The last wicket pairing of youngsters Harley Adams making his debut and Matty Walters added a further 12 runs with both hitting a boundary. Matty was bowled off the last ball of the 43rd over with the score on 149. Harley looked solid in his 18 minute stay for 7 not out. Their wickets were shared equally by the 3 main bowlers with 3 wickets each.
The skies were quite overcast as we took to the field. Mike Eyre quickly hit 2 boundaries in Beaver's 1st over, but our wily veteran hit back in his 2nd over with a wicket maiden. Eyre sent a sharp catch to Sheads to gobble up in the gully. From this point, the visiting batsmen were pegged back by exceedingly tight bowling. Of the 1st 12 overs, young Matty's figures were 6-3-4-0 and Beaver's were 6-4-11-1. Tommy replaced Matty and kept up the good work bowling very tidy. The score had laboured to 28 for 1 after 17 overs. Then the breakthrough when Sheads replaced Beaver. After bowling 2 wides, Kipling was tempted into an on drive but succeeded only in hitting the ball down the throat of Hax at mid on. That was 30 for 2. Next over and Tommy got a wicket when Joe Barker found Boo at mid off. Then in Sheads next over, Rob Holt's stumps were dis-arranged and it was 40 for 4. Opener Steve Ridley at the other end was doing a Boycott. His partnership with Richard Cook didn't last long. He chanced his luck hitting a drive to Boo in the covers, for a quick single. But Boo's return to keeper Tiff was too good and Cook was run out. That was 48 for 5. Ridley's 100 minute stay in the middle was finally ended when young Matty pegged him for 23 in the 25th over, and 53 for 6. Matty struck again in his next over thanks to a brilliant low flying leap by Boo to his right to cling on to a Norman drive at mid wicket, and 56 for 7. That was a wicket maiden, and so too was Sheads next over, the 28th. Beaver's accurate throw from behind square leg ran out their skipper Carl Wilson going for another quick single. And 2 balls later Josh Stockill nicked one into Tiff's gloves, and 56 for 9. Next over by Matty and left hander Leigh Watson cowed a boundary to the shed. He tried to do the same next ball but hit it straight down Tommy's throat for a good clean catch, and they were all out for 60. A big winning margin of 89 runs for our boys.
This unexpected big victory was brought about by a brilliant all round team performance and good captaincy. It's hard to imagine we were struggling for a team just a few hours earlier. Tiff held the innings together at the top of the order, and when he was out, Tuna and Beaver continued the good work. The innings was concluded by a little but effective last wicket partnership between 2 promising youngsters, one making his debut. All our bowlers bowled with distinction, especially young Matty who returned his best ever figures for the club, 8.2 overs 4 maidens 9 runs 3 wickets. He was well backed up by Sheads with 3 for 17 from 6 overs. Beaver and Tommy with a wicket apiece were also very economical. The fielding was also very good with nearly all the catches taken. Boo's flying leap was the pick of the bunch, and he got another catch and a run out as well. Good catches by Sheads, Hax and Tommy produced high spirits and an accurate shy by Beaver rounded things off. That's 2 home games won, and with the next 3 all at home due to a fixture querk, confidence will be high even after a week's lay off. UTS!!
