Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Won by 51 runs

Match report After a delay for rain, the match got underway at 1.55pm with Dave winning the toss and electing to bat, 4 overs having been lost. And it was Dave who was 1st to go getting an edge to the keeper, though he said it came off his pad. He had made 4 of the 6 runs on the board after 3 overs. Archie and Tiff consolidated, taking the score to 37 in the 14th over when Tiff drove straight into hands at cover for 11. Enter Shish, rested from the 1st team with a sore knee. You would never have realised that the way he started. In the next over, the 1st 3 balls went 4 4 4. and the scoring rate went up. Next over 4 2 4 and after 3 overs at the crease he had scored 27 runs. That spurred Archie in to hitting 2 boundaries in the 20th over. 3 more runs and 2 overs later he was back in the pavilion for 23 having had his stumps rattled, and the score was 81 for 3. Young Tommy soon followed with another rush of blood that saw his stumps displaced, but not before Shish had hit 6 4 1 the previous over. That was 93 for 4. There then followed a big partnership between Shish and Hax that would take the score beyond our visitors reach by the time they were parted. Shish drove a 4 through cover point to bring up his 50 in the 25th over. It had taken him just 46 minutes. Much of the scoring thereafter by the big fellas was done by Shish with boundaries virtually every over. Hax played a more defensive strategy extremely well in support with an odd boundary or two. Shish scored his 17th boundary to bring up his 100 in the 34th over, and that 2nd 50 had taken him a further 40 minutes. The score at that point was 164 for 4. Shish was eventually bowled for 110 in the 37th over, and the partnership had put on 88 runs, with the score on 181 for 4. Gaz Walters was comprehensively bowled 2 balls later, and Daz Hastie was removed the following over for a single again. That was 182 for 7. Hax now had to take charge to get the score over 200. Next over, the 39th, he hit 2 6 2 4 to take us close. Next ball he called for a quick single but young Matty not backing up was run out at the keeper's end, and 198 for 8. Hax hit 9 from the last over and with 2 wides and an edged single to 3rd man from young Harley, the final score was 211 for 8. A pretty good and satisfactory effort from our boys with Hax unbeaten on 48. He was denied a 50 because of a bowler mix up, with the opening bowler starting to bowl a 13th over, and the new bowler having a 5 ball over to compensate.
The sun was behind the clouds when Newton started their reply. Beaver got the breakthrough in the 6th over with 7 on the board. He tempted Ridsdale into an upward cover drive which young Harley cleverly stooped low to catch. Opener Heslehurst and Stuart Harrison then dug in to consolidate taking the score along to just over 2 an over. The partnership added 38 runs in 13 overs, and it was Archie who broke them up in the 19th over, hitting Heslehurst's stumps. He made 22. Koppy Harrison then hit a 4 before tickling an Archie delivery into Tiff's gloves in the 21st over. Archie claimed his 3rd wicket in the 25th over when he bowled Simon Moore for a duck. Left handed father Zack then consolidated with partner Stuart Harrison, before launching out with a 6 and a 4 in the 36th over to up the scoring rate. Harrison had got his 50 with a single in the previous over, but fell in the 36th over when captain Dave trapped him lbw for 59. That was 120 for 5 and the partnership had put on 62 runs. In Dave's next over, the 38th, Zack played the ball to Tommy at mid wicket and went for a quick single. Tommy gathered the ball and his accurate throw at the bowler's end stumps ran Zack out for 25 runs, and it was 127 for 6. Knaggs and Southwell then added 23 runs in the final overs. Daz Hastie was given a go to bowl the final over with the game too far out of Newton's reach. With his 3rd ball he cleaned up Southwell, and Knaggs finished the game off with 2 boundaries. But it really didn't matter as they ended on 160 for 7, 51 runs short of our score. Knaggs was 19 not out and Archie was our most successful bowler with 3 for 27 from 9 overs.
This was an excellent victory backed up by a good all round team display. Man of the match Shish led the way with his excellent knock, and with good batting support from Hax and Archie, a challenging score was set for the visitors. Then Archie did the business with the ball as well. Our front 3 bowlers were more economical than theirs, and the fielding was very good too. Even those that didn't get runs with the bat contributed, and the spirit in the camp is very high. With the addition of new players, competition for places is good, and this bodes well for the rest of the season. Up next is top of the league Sewerby. On this performance, I know we can give them a run for their money, and who knows............up there challenging them for the title. UTS!!
