Match report Wykeham won the toss and put Seamer in to bat on this sunny day with a gentle breeze. Archie got his dad running 4 2's in the 2nd over, and it was 15 for 0 after 6 overs. Scoring in singles and 2's was steady with Archie stroking the 1st boundary in the 9th over. Dave drove his 1st boundary in the 15th over and it was 39 at the end of it. Left arm legger Liam Eyre came on for the 17th, and immediately struck when Archie cut him straight into Pete Shepherdson's hands at gully for 25. That was 44 for 1. Dave was next to go in the 20th over when he nicked a Christian Soulsby delivery into keeper Toby Wrightson's gloves for 20, and it was 48 for 2. Scoring runs was slow as Daz and Sheads settled in. The score laboured to 59 in the 25th over before Sheads also steered an Eyre delivery to Shepherdson at gully for a simple catch. Next over, Dazzler looked surprised to see his stumps broken by Soulsby for 8, and 61 for 4. Tuna had started slowly steering the singles and 2's when DJ joined him at the crease. Against tight bowling, they took the score on to 78 in the 31st over where DJ became young Eyre's 3rd victim. Having hit the 14 year old to mid wicket 2 overs earlier, he tried the same again but only succeeded in skying one straight down the throat of David Stockhill. Then at the start of the next over by Ian Thompson, young Matty looped straight into the keeper's gloves and we were 78 for 6. Matty's dad Gary was next in and kept the board ticking with singles. In Eyre's next over, the 33rd, Gaz planted him over mid wicket for 6 off a no ball. Runs were being gathered and Tuna hit his 1st boundary off Thompson's next over. Singles and 2's were common at this stage and the pair took the score well past the 100 mark with some good running between the wickets. The partnership was worth 41 runs by the time Gaz was bowled by Basher Wilson in the 40th over. He made 19 and it was 119 for 7. Beaver was sent in to have a blast at the loose deliveries, and with Tuna seeing the ball well, the pair added 22 in 4 overs. Beaver was cleaned up by Wilson in the 44th over with the score on 141, and 4 runs were added in the final over to finish on 145 for 8. Tuna ended up on 48 not out hitting the final delivery for 2 instead of 4. Young Eyre was their best bowler with 3 for 33 from 10 overs.
Wykeham opened up with George Shannon and former Seamer batsman Steve Eyre, father of bowler Liam. Runs were hard to come by against the tight bowling of DJ and Matty. They only had 8 on the board after 5 overs and 17 after 10 overs. Matty came off after 6 overs with impressive figures of 0 for 10, and was replaced by Beaver. The breakthrough came in the 15th over when DJ bowled Shannon for 14. Eyre was stroking singles with the occasional 2, playing out more overs than runs scored. His partnership with Ian Thompson took the score to 50 after 22 overs, well behind the required rate. Thompson was out in the 25th over when he hit a rising shot off Archie to dad Dave at mid off. That was 56 for 2. Eyre had scored 25 when he finally succumbed to Beaver in the 28th over, sending a catch to Daz Hastie at square leg. That was 64 for 3, and the very next ball saw Toby Wrightson's stumps shattered. The partnership of Soulsby and left hander Shepherdson got the scoreboard moving again with 3 wides and a 4 in the next over, the 29th by Archie. Dave replaced his son in the 33rd over and bowled steady away. Beaver finished his 12 over spell with a maiden taking 2 for 26. That was the 36th over and it was 93 for 4. Matty returned for the 38th over and 2 wickets fell straightaway. Off the 2nd delivery, Soulsby hit the ball to Gaz Walts at mid wicket. He threw in to the keeper and Shepherdson was run out for 16. Next ball, Stockhill scooped the ball up to Sheads at mid off for a simple catch, and it was 96 for 6. Wykeham still needed 50 runs and just over 7 overs to get them. Soulsby and Dan Bateson kept the scoreboard ticking until the 41st over when Soulsby was sent packing for 22 runs. The ball was played off Dave to Beaver at backward square leg. He picked up the ball, threw in and Soulsby was the 2nd run out in a short space of time. That was 113 for7, and 33 needed in just 4 overs. DJ was re-introduced for the 42nd over, but conceded 9 runs including 2 wides. Dave bowled the 43rd over, and after a couple of singles, Liam Eyre sent a straight forward catch to Cal Metcalf at cover and it was 124 for 8. Wykeham needed 20 off the last 2 overs. DJ bowled the 44th over, and Wilson hit the 1st delivery for 3. Bateson was pegged 2nd delivery for 14. Captain Steve Day was last man in and hit the 4th delivery for 4. A 2 off the 5th and a leg bye off the 6th took the score to 136 for 9 and 10 was needed off the last over by Dave. 2 singles off the first 3 balls meant 8 needed of the next 3. A big swing from Day and the ball sailed over mid wicket for 6 into the field. Day then swung round despatching the 5th delivery to the backward square leg boundary, to win the match for his side with a ball to spare. He finished unbeaten on 17 and had been at the wicket less than 2 overs.
What a huge disappointment to lose this, the tightest of matches from a winning position. We had enough experience in the side to stop them getting 50 runs from the last 7 overs, and indeed 20 runs from the last 2. We had 4 batsmen who contributed with decent scores. Archie and Dave got us off to a sound start, Tuna was exceptional and Gaz backed him up in a partnership late on. On that wicket, 145 was a decent score. Our bowlers did well keeping it tight for much of the game. DJ in his 1st spell, Matty and Beaver were very economical. We lost it in the last 4 overs conceeding 9, 4, 10, and 10 respectively. Our fielding was good with 4 catches and 2 run outs. Wykeham had that little bit of luck to get them over the line. We have to put this behind us, and go again next weekend. UTS!!
