Ebberston B v Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Seamer & Irton CC 2nd XI (Evening) on Thu 06 Jun 2019 at 18.15
Seamer & Irton Cricket Club Lost by 16 runs

Match report Ebberston won the toss and chose to bat in sunny conditions. Openers Welford and Holmes got them off to a flying start with 5 increasing to 6 runs an over for the 1st 6 overs. Beaver struck the 1st blow in the 6th over when he cleaned up Holmes for 14 with the score on 30. More success for Beaver in his next over when Wingrove sent a shot in the air to young Caeleb Potter at cover who smartly pouched the catch and it was 44 for 2. Beaver grabbed his 3rd wicket in his 5th over, the 10th when he pegged Horsley for a duck, and that was 52 for 3. Meanwhile, Welford at the other end was going great guns punishing any loose deliveries and more than holding his own. For a time he had an able partner in captain Megginson, as the pair gathered the runs in the next 5 overs. Archie parted them in the 15th over when Megginson hit up in the air to long on where young Cal Metcalf took a good catch. That was 85 for 4. Neil Eddon came in and the runs kept coming. Welford got his 50 in the 17th over, it had taken him 56 minutes. He was eventually caught off Matty's bowling by Archie at deep mid off for 63 in the 19th over. There was a flurry of runs after that with 9 coming from the rest of Matty's over, and 14 from the last over bowled by Daz Hastie. However there was some consolation for Daz when Tuna took a fine catch on the long on boundary to dismiss Newton. Eddon finished on 20 not out and the final score was 141 for 6. Beaver had 3 for 25 from his 5 overs.
It was still bright when Archie and Tom went out to open. They struggled for runs against the fast pace of Newton and the guile of Holmes. Tom was pegged by Holmes in the 4th over for 3 with the score on 10. Tuna came in and quickly launched into the bowlers with 2 boundaries in successive overs. Archie was bowled by Newton in the 7th over for 9, and the score was 20 for 2. That brought Sheads to the middle. Boundaries were needed but singles were being taken, and the score was only 29 after the 10th over. Then the 2 batsmen upped the ante with the intoduction of slow bowler and former Cloughton keeper King. They launched into him with a flurry of boundaries taking 9 and 18 off his next 2 overs. New bowler Hebron at the far end was similarly treated with 8 and 15 coming from his 2 overs. During this period, the players came off for a heavy shower, but were back on in 10 minutes. After 14 overs, the score had moved rapidly on to 79, and it didn't stop there. King's next over conceded 9 runs. Horsley bowled the 16th with 8 runs taken from it, before a mis-timed off drive by Tuna found its way into Welford's clutches at cover point. Tuna had scored 39 and it was 96 for 3. He was replaced by Matty. Paceman Newton was back for the 17th over, but only 2 singles and 2 wides were scored. 8 runs were scored from Horsley's next over, the 18th and it was 108 for 3. Back came King for his 5th over, the 19th, and Sheads launched into him with 2 sixes which brought him his 50. It was a valiant effort, and 22 were still needed from 8 balls. Eddon's last over was too tight and we ended up short by 16 runs on 125 for 3. Sheads finished unbeaten on 57.
With 6 seniors and 5 juniors in our side, we did make a game of it. We always had a chance whilst Tuna and Sheads were together, but once that partnership was broken it was too tall an order. The pair did remarkably well to take us fairly close considering we had got off to a slow start. Conversely, they got off to the kind of start we would've wished for, and set us a challenging total in the end. It was nice to see a couple of our younger members taking catches especially Callum's at long off. Good luck to Ebberston in the next round.
